I just finished rereading The Hunger Games books which, omg, I forgot I had so much love for. I particularly enjoyed the culture of District 12 in the first book, the feeling of constant surveillance and dystopia in the second one, and Katniss' fragile mental state in the third. Mocking jay was much better this time around, an although the last fourth of the book is a bit different than some expected, I actually really liked the way it went this time round. It possibly helped that I didn't read through the night and finish it at 6AM.
The way Plutarch Heavensbee is written was really cool, especially when compared to President Coin. He's on the "good" side, yet cheerfully despicable at every opportunity, whereas Coin, who is superficially everything the Capitol is not and never says a careless word, is the one who isn't Katniss' ally. The way Coin rarely appeared or spoke frankly was interesting as well - the former made her into a shadowy figure who wanted to covertly assume power, like District 13 itself, and the latter out her at odds with Snow, who made it a point to be honest with Katniss. The people of the Capitol, then, are shallow in every way - they are equally upfront about their frivolity, cruelty and sinister intent. President Snow's greatest secret - his rise to power via assassination - is written on his face in his puffy lips and bloody breath. Finnick, who appears to be the most assimilated into the culture of the Capitol, is described as being dressed by his stylist in as little clothing as possible - he has to be literally exposed to blend in with a society whose hearts and minds are constantly on display (as seen when Effie tells Haymitch and Peeta to wear something gold, because to her they're only a team if they outwardly match).
Also shhh don't tell anyone but this post is actually a reminder to myself to see if there's anyone on fandomaid offering hunger games fan mixes because I want an Annie/Finnick one like burning. I didn't care a huge amount about his character, but the actor in Catching Fire was so gentle with Mags that it pinged my thin for pseudo familial relationships and now I'm doomed to love him forever and ignore that bit where SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER. Also his knot-tying to distract himself. :( I totally did that with lanyards when I missed my campers from the previous week. I really liked how he and katniss sort of hung out in the third book.
Speaking of Katniss, there are so many femmeslashy undertones, HO HO HO. If I weren't on my phone I'd def be transcribing quotes.
I'm starting to actually believe I'm a sun god, because I'm in Seattle right now, and it a. Stops raining whenever I walk outside and b. is raining in San Diego right now. While I am not there.
