The Great Engagement Story

Friday started off as a crappy day. I went to UT to sign up with its temporary service and had to run all over campus getting that set up. They gave me an assignment and I was supposed to start on Tuesday, but when I got home they called me and said that the department had cancelled the posting but not notified the HR department. That was $19 spent in parking and parking permits plus a morning wasted, so I was pretty disappointed.

My dad called me later that afternoon and told me that my mom had a minor heart attack. She's doing fine now, but Thursday night she felt like she had indigestion, took some medicine, and went to bed. She woke up the Friday and still felt bad, so she went to the ER and sure enough, it was a minor heart attack. The doctors are running tests right now and they're trying to determine if they need to do a stint or bypass surgery. She's in good spirits and joking about the situation (she had to be transported to another hospital and the ambulance got lost trying to find to hospital, imagine if she'd really been sick!) so I'm sure she'll be fine. I may be heading down to Louisiana depending on what goes on next week, so please keep her in your thoughts.

Anyway, obviously I was upset and freaking out about my mom so BJ stopped at HEB on his way home from work and got me some roses, both to cheer me up and because it's our anniversary on Sunday. I was putting the roses in a vase and turned around and he was down on one knee with a ring! I was very surprised to say the least. Once I quit crying and laughing at the same time I said yes and now it's official. We’re gonna get hitched. Strap on the old ball and chain. Etc etc etc.

We're excited, but we have no idea what the date will be. Most probably 1-2 years from now, unless I go crazy planning things and insist we go to the courthouse, or to Vegas to be married by an Elvis impersonator. I’m really not that picky.

So Friday night we went out with katherinemorrow and her fiancée to Stortini (or was it technically the Red House Bar Katie?) and ate and drank and had a raucous good time. I called Katie on our way over to her place but didn’t tell her that BJ proposed, and waited for her to spot the ring. Five minutes and some obvious hand-stretching around a wine glass and her mouth just dropped open and she was like “Wait a second….” It was pretty hilarious.

Shiny yet happy. We'll need to take a better picture soon.

Katie and I showing off our respective bling.

Chocolate + bread + ring = One happy camper.

One more picture of the ring.

So that was my weekend. Some of the bad but then some of the good to even it out. I think I've got a keeper.
