Cabaret by Canberra Philharmonic Society

Last night I went to see Cabaret with Lucy and Kaley,  friends from work.  It was fantastic!

People are so amazingly talented and I was blown away by the singing,  dancing and set design :)  the costumes were the only element that was a bit blah.

The jazz band were sitting above the stage and the conductor and players were in corsets and bright red lipstick.

The musical,  is set in roughly the 1920s-1935ish Berlin and showed the increasing power of Nazism in Germany via the goings on in the Kit Kat Club.

for me, the show climaxed right before intermission when most men on stage were wearing Nazi swastikas on their left shoulder.  They started singing about the great father land,  doing Hitler salutes.  And then.  Six enormous swastika flags were suddenly hung above and around stage and I felt like I was back in Nazi Germany.

It was confronting and terrifying.  My head went into fight / flight mode and I had to force  myself to actually stay in the seat instead of running away.

It was really well done.  Obviously, Their intention was to make to audience uncomfortable and show how Nazism took its hold.

In fact I read a bit more about different productions of Cabaret in parts of the USA and apparently in one city the actors come out to the audience and handed out mini Nazi flags.....  I would have freaked out.

Anyway,  this all confirms that I love musicals and I love Canberra Philharmonic Society!
