[After his conversation with Maria, Athrun realized that he'd been neglecting his martial arts training too much. Which is now why Athrun seems to be squaring off...against a Gallade? Surely he can't be serious. Yep, it just knocked Athrun to the ground.
...Wait, did Athrun use a leg scissor to trip it up? And then lock its arms behind its back and start applying a hold to its head?
Yep, it seems like he's serious about this sparring match.
For those of you versed in the martial arts, it should be apparent that Athrun isn't adhering to any one discipline, yet his moves are all calculated and controlled. He appears to be using some sort of hybridization. He also has the tendency to let his opponent make the first move and react to it. He takes a hit every now and then, but more often than not he can beat his foe's blows with his own or by reversing them into holds.
This goes for easily 20 minutes without a break. Eventually, the Gallade throws a kick, and Athrun grabs its leg, pushes the Gallade to the ground, then steps in, pulling the leg up very high. He then drops down, wraps the Gallade's thigh with his left arm, puts his right knee on its upper chest, and holds a fist above its face.
A beat.
Then both combatants relax, and Athrun lets go of the Gallade's leg and climbs to his feet. The Gallade follows suit. Athrun walks over to the PokéGear and picks it up.]
Again? I should figure out why the broadcast function comes on when I record a video...
[Then the video focuses on Athrun's face. His hair has been roughed up and his brow is sweaty, but he looks pretty pleased.]
A conversation I recently had set me thinking -- I haven't had to use my martial arts training once since I arrived. A lot of disputes, even in self-defense, are settled with Pokémon battles. But if I ever lose, then I don't want to be left powerless, so I'm getting back to practice. I think I've worked some kinks out already, myself.
So, I want to ask -- is anyone else here versed in martial arts? I'd like to get some practice against human opponents for a change, since a Gallade's physiology is...well, different. He needs to hold back, too, and I'd like some sparring partners close to my level in ability. I'd also like to hear about any disciplines you might know. The more I see, the more I figure I can learn to fight against.
...Oh, and one more thing. If you're not trained? Do NOT try to imitate what I just did.
[Hear that, Maria and Cocona?]
