When you are da moon...

Go to my Flickr page to see some photos, like I promised I'd upload! :D

And now, some important information about our local forest-dwellers that are not bears.

Band-tailed pigeons are fine old gentlemen, often seen standing about in their social clubs wearing their finest dinner jackets and tophats and monocles and smoking cigars while saying things like "wot wot, old chap?" They're a bit senile, though, and tend to notice only belatedly when someone comes across them - apparently, the best place to gather and sip scotch is the middle of the road.

At least they don't jaywalk like deer do, though. These roving bandits travel in packs and ransack towns late at night and early in the morning, then leap out across the road without a care for where a crosswalk may be. Thankfully, the forest has its own guides to keep travelers safe from these brigands. Ruffed grouse will often stand in roads until you come across them, at which point they trot slowly down the road in front of you and cluck angrily at anything that might be in your way, such as stray squirrels, or deer. They do a fine job of keeping the unaware driver from hitting anything that might be in the road, and they do so at their own risk. How bold and gracious, the ruffed grouse!

Cougars, unlike bears and deer, are good upstanding citizens. They don't make irritating pitfall traps that could catch just about anything. No, instead they just kill and eat you upfront. At least they're honest about it. And unlike just about everything else, they do get out of the road well ahead of where you are, so that often all you see of them is a tail disappearing into the grass at the farthest reaches of your headlights.
