I’m a big boy already.
Shingo starts chanting the words as he trudges the way to the studio where he will meet with the other boys for a rehearsal. Being the youngest of the group SMAP that was just formed by Johnny’s Entertainment, people tend to baby him which he kinda hates.
He’s a big boy now and the other guys shall know that starting today. His mom isn’t accompanying him anymore. It took him a lot of explaining and persuading that he can already go to places on his own. He want to show everyone that he’s a brave boy and that he can be one of them.
“Shingo!”
His heart lurches and he stops in his tracks. He knows that voice. It belongs to that guy who scared him the first time he arrived to attend the audition in the agency months before. He wants to run but his feet seem to have a brain if their own.
Tsuyoshi taps his shoulder. “You’re early today.”
“Yes.” Shingo answered meekly, wanting to add ‘so are you’ but he is unable to speak anymore. Tsuyoshi smiles at him and they walk together towards the rehearsal room. Shingo’s heart is beating so fast because of the fear, shyness and awkwardness as he follows the older boy. The moment they arrived in the room, he scampers to where Goro is.
They are briefed for the things they shall do in the coming performance. Everything went good except for some blunders Goro did in the dancing. Shingo has forgotten the troubles he had felt earlier and he is able to joke around with the other boys except, of course Tsuyoshi who is always busy talking to Mori.
After the meeting and the rehearsals, Shingo quickly joins Nakai, Takuya and Mori. He heard them a while ago that they will go somewhere and he wants to join them. Goro declined earlier and he was called kill joy by the older guys.
“Guys, can I come too?” Shingo asks excitedly with bright eyes. The older guys just give him a sorry look.
“Sorry, Shingo you’re too young to go with us. Next time, okay?” Nakai says, patting the young boy’s head.
Shingo slumps his shoulders in defeat and he pouts as he watches the three leave the room. He felt hurt but more annoyed by this unfair treatment. He’s not a child anymore. Why can’t they see that?
“Hey, Shingo, want to go to the arcade?”
Shingo turns behind him to see Tsuyoshi smiling, his eyes disappearing to slits. He feels the familiar fear he felt some time ago.
“I know a nice arcade around here and they have new games. Come on.”
Shingo quietly follows Tsuyoshi once again. He is afraid of him yet he’s drawn to him in an unexplainable way.
They walk in silence, Shingo glancing at Tsuyoshi from time to time. He looks serene with a calm aura around him. He wonders if he’s really like this.
They arrive in the arcade and Shingo feels awkward at first and he knows Tsuyoshi is feeling the same but minutes later when they start playing the game, they found themselves having so much fun. Their laughters fill the booth they occupy and even though they lose to each other, it’s okay. They play more games until the late afternoon.
After they get tired from playing games, Tsuyoshi bought him some Yakitori and Takoyaki and they went to a nearby park to eat the food there.
While looking at the Takoyaki, Shingo decides to speak up.
“Hey, Tsuyoshi.”
Tsuyoshi looks at him as he rolls his Takoyaki on the sauce.
“You’re not bad and scary after all.”
Tsuyoshi just laugh and he continue eating his Takoyaki.
Shingo feels relieved that Tsuyoshi didn’t make any comment about what he said, instead he starts telling him about the story of how he idolized Shonentai and they are the reason why he joined Johnny’s Entertainment.
As he listens attentively to him and he quietly wishes that this friendship will last for a long time.
Years later, during a winter night in Korea where Shingo decides to celebrate his birthday with Tsuyoshi, he learns the truth, after reminiscing the moment they became friends years ago, that Tsuyoshi declined the invitation of Nakai, Takuya and Mori a day earlier that time because he knew the three will not let Shingo come with them and he wanted the young boy to feel that he belongs in the group through him so he sort of forced him to play with him in the arcades and to eat snacks in the park.
Tsuyoshi is smiling at him shyly as he tells him the story.Shingo returns his smile, knowing in his heart that he feels grateful and happy that his wish back then came true.
