Unlike the other stories I've mentioned so far, 'Bedtime Stories' is much darker, grimmer and more haunting than any of them. Centered around the time a young Jim Kirk was on Tarsus IV and the plague that occurred there, this story is all about survival, and the harsh depths one must sometimes sink to, not only to stay alive, but to save others.
This story is full of graphic death, horrible, depraved actions, and it features a Jim Kirk who is nothing if not feral and barely human. Even though the title is 'Bedtime Stories', there is nothing gentle or amusing or child-friendly about this fic. Each chapter in this story is taken from a child's fairytale, or story, from Beauty and the Beast, to The Pied Piper, to The Boy and the Wolves.
There are shades of the original stories by The Brothers Grimm, with none of the more Disney-esque versions around. There is blood and fear and horror in every chapter, and this story will claw at you, it will dig deep down inside of you and entreat the darkest parts of your psyche. You will not be able to look away and you will be dragged into a state of anxious camaraderie, wishing, hoping, wanting and fearing for every character who makes an appearance.
Jim Kirk is hard in this story, hardened and rough and so protective that he will make you want to weep for him, and for the children he gives everything to protect. This small band of teens, children, toddlers and infants are locked in a life or death struggle, and the only one keeping them alive is Jim Kirk, who is barely human himself.
This is not a cheerful story. It is dark and heavy and through it all there is an utmost sense of unfairness and loss. Even so, 'Bedtime Stories' is incredibly written, and so emotive that you won't care about anything other than finishing the story.
If you believe you are up to the experience, read it for yourself.
