I had to write an article for the newspaper.
It's about the college application process, sort of.
I'm very open to constructive criticism/praise

Tedious, Torturous, and Time Consuming

Can you feel the tension choking the atmosphere of Hendrick Hudson? That’s right, it’s college application time. The tedious monotony of filling out the dreadful common app, the anticipation of the unknown, the immense hope for acceptance. For some of us it’s a piece of cake; an opportunity to show off how many community service hours we’ve managed to rack up over these past four years, or how many rewards we have so graciously received. For others, like myself, it is a time of indecision and ultimate confusion.
Now that you have gone through the thorough process of hand picking the schools that meet your criteria, will you be able to strive to meet theirs? After all the solicitation and college visits, what it really boils down to is you and your applications. The college application process is continuously posing new questions. You must decide how you would like to apply, online or by paper? Will you apply early decision or on a normal deadline? Who will you choose to write your recommendations? And how in the world are you supposed to manage your time? For this, I offer no answer, just empathy.
Parents and teachers have repeatedly told us exactly how important it was to do well during the past few years. Now looking back on it, every test and homework counted for a small portion of our grade point averages. Each time we neglected to study or finish homework because we just had to see that show, or we were far too tired, it hurt our chances just a little bit. It is unbelievable that we have now reached a collective result from all those years combined. It comes in the form of your transcript, which strips you of everything except for the classes you took and the grades you received. Is the slight feeling of relief that you feel when you proudly check off the advanced placement class box worth all the work you did in your AP classes? Does the feeling of regret that consumes you when you’re filling out community service hours make you wish you took more of your free time to contribute? There were so many seemingly diminutive decisions, but they seemed to have amassed to either open or close doors for you.
As the year drags on and we have sent off those thick envelops containing our potential futures, senioritis will inevitably kick in for most of us. Eventually we will all be strolling around smugly in our caps and gowns congratulating one another, but until then we are forced to suffer through the excruciating college application process, an anxious pain that, as seniors, we all share.
