Where to go first?  The obvious answer was Terry’s, especially if he was hoping to stay there again.  If he was going to be honest, however, he wondered if even his friend’s easy nature would allow him to forgive Michaels’ shocking rudeness at taking off with hardly a word and then remaining silent for all these months.

Which certainly applied to Miss Edgecombe, too, perhaps even more so.  Michael hardly expected a warm reception there.

It might have helped if he’d arrived earlier-perhaps he could have gone to the Ministry first, doing what he could to get his old job back.  At least then he could have shown proof that he planned on sticking around.  Not that he was even sure he wanted to work at the Ministry again.

He wasn’t sure about anything, but wasn’t it odd that he felt-the moment he set foot on River Road-that he’d come home again?

Standing at the corner of River and Alpha, he hitched his bag over his shoulder, trying to work up the nerve to cross the river towards Terry’s flat.  His free hand made an involuntary motion towards his pocket, seeking a carton of cigarettes that wasn’t there.

Fortification.

That’s what he needed, and if he couldn’t have nicotine, he wasn’t going to deny himself alcohol.  He turned around, heading in the direction of the pub.

The moment he opened the door, he felt better.  There really was nothing on earth like the smell of a British pub, was there?.  Especially when there was the scent of magic in the air, too.

He sidled up to the bar, ordering up a pint and dropping his bag on the floor.

I'm home.
