I just had one of the best weekends of my life! I didn't go anywhere special, just up to Seattle... but it was like an oasis in the middle of my never-ending stress.
It started with an opera in Columbia city on Friday night. It wasn't a classical foreign opera with a plot and all, but it was better. A group of 6 singers put on a fantastic show in a dinner room setting. They sang and staged songs by Sondheim, Newman, and Weill- all in English, so that the audience was drawn in even more. Their diction was astonishing- always using the consonant just before the beat, so that every word was understood, but also well sung. And the acting!... I'm feel inspired.
Then I went dancing in Seattle at Blues Underground. The stress had built up so much that it took me almost an hour to finally relax into the dance. But when I did relax, I had some of the most empowered and connected dances. I focused the knots in my neck and the aches in my head and back and focused them into dancing, and it was good.
After the dance, Orville and I went back to his place. We ate fruit and drank tea, then slept until 2:00 the next day. I spent the rest of the weekend in his company, and I can't begin to describe how GOOD it was. We ate brunch in the sun and played cribbage (he beat me, again). He smeared my face with biscuit and raspberry jam, then proceeded to lick it off, then we spit and caught grapes. Later, he chatted with Mom, who seemed to like him. That night, we watched Memoirs of a Geisha over a candlelight dinner and wine. (Cooking tip: spread coconut shreddings instead of parmesan over spaghetti, mmmmm.) In the middle of the movie, he paused and asked me what my first love was like. The conversation following was one of the closest we've ever shared. The movie was finished later, and the his housemate walked in to Orville and I making out on the couch. We left for a blues house party shortly after.
Walking to the car after the blues party, I said, "Each day we spend together feels like the best day of my life, and the next day we spend together feels like it is even better, and the best day of my life. Our best days just keep getting better." This morning, when we woke, Orville said to me, "I understand what you meant, when you said that each day we spend together feels like the best day, and the next day is an even better best day."
When I left this afternoon, he sent me home with leftovers from last night's beautiful dinner, and I sit here eating them now, remembering our best weekend. Yum.
