What a fabulous weekend it has been. Friday night was a birthday bowling bash, Saturday was BAD BOOKS, and Sunday was a beautiful beach day with my best friend (alliteration ftw).
Bad Books, what do I even say? First of all, I am always blown away by how amazing and how talented and how wonderful Kevin Devine is and last night was definitely a testament to that. He is such a crazy badass musician and I love him so so so much.
Gobotron opened and honestly I was so looking forward to hearing Robert's stuff because I had NO IDEA what it could sound like. Robert (as well as the rest of Mano) is such an enigma and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised to hear his music! It was really cool, and I loved that Kevin was part of the band (btw this is probably the perfect time to mention that KD was wearing what
lonelytourist refers to as a "Canadian Tuxedo", dark denim jeans with a light denim shirt lol). The songs they played were really rad and I most definitely purchased the album after his set. He played a cover of 'Fuck and Run' that sounded fabulous (on par with Jesse's, I mean it) and then he closed his set with a song I really, really liked but it's not on his album. It was about being fifty below in his bedroom - if anyone has any idea what I'm talking about please fill me in!
Right Away Great Captain! was great, Andy always is, but I really don't think that they're my cup of tea. I love the idea of RAGC! stories are so fascinating and especially the ones Andy tells but the music is so so so slow and I get lost before I can figure out what they're actually singing about.
Bad Books was fabulous. There was SO MUCH BANTER (dick jokes, obituaries, "we're living in tron, it's a fucking rave in this place", Tupac is in the audience, Hanson's tip of the show: there are no rules, Darius Rucker is in the audience, Kevin has never sold out any venue in his 44 years, "what do you like in a girl?", we're bff with Built to Spill, etc) it was fabulous. I love banter pretty much as much as I love the actual music and they definitely prepared some fruitful stories and jokes. We got to see the entire Bad Books Album, a Built to Spill cover (The Plan), Thanklin' Franklin Cotton Crush, Now That You're Home, Shake it Out, and KAREEM ABDUL JABAAR <3 AND 50 CENT IS MY FAVORITE RAPPER. We also got a semi cover of "Let Her Cry" by Hootie and the Blowfish lol. It was such a fabulous night.
I have videos of Holding Down the Laughter, Let Her Cry // Mesa, AZ, Thanklin' Franklin, Wouldn't Have to Ask // Kevin's Never Made It, and the Dick Jokes // Obituaries. They are here:
