Their boots crunch along the gravel road, but they don't speak. Clary can't stand the silence.
She wants to grab Jace by the shoulders and force him to look at her. She wants to scream at him- "Don't you understand? I love you, that's why I can't. I can't watch you hurt yourself; I can't be the WAY that you hurt yourself!" She wants to pull him to her and hold him until that pained look vanishes from his eyes, but she's the last person that could ever comfort him.
They continue on in silence, the words she wants to scream pounding in her mind to the rhythm of their footsteps.
