Drilling Alaska

Arctic Refuge Still at Risk. I posted the first round of this on 7/21 - this is one step further.

Congressional proponents of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge failed to win support for drilling, despite a new ploy linking revenues from oil and gas leases in the refuge to the cleanup of abandoned coal mines and health benefits for coalminers (despite the “linkage,” the benefits would still have required separate appropriations, just as they do today).

WWF activists sent 11,000 messages objecting to this version of drilling legislation -- on top of tens of thousands of messages they’ve sent in the past to protect the refuge. The United Mine Workers of America also opposed the new bill, and it was pulled from the House schedule. However, the bill’s backers hope to work out a deal and get the bill up for consideration by the House before Congress adjourns later this year.

The Sea Turtle (Marine Turtle Conservation Act) law passed too!

The measure will help in the recovery and protection of marine turtles by providing financial assistance for projects in foreign countries to protect nesting marine turtles and their habitat, prevent illegal trade in marine turtle parts and products, and support community outreach and education. The bill passed not a moment too soon: All seven of the world’s species of marine turtles are endangered.
