Hi, friends. Where did the time go? And where have I been?
-In March, H. and I went to British Columbia. We spent a few days in Vancouver and then went to Harrison Hot Springs. Highlights of the trip included hanging out at the Public Market on Granville Island, wandering around the UBC campus and easting chocolate mousse at Death By Chocolate. Harrison Hot Springs is nice, but is kind of a fancy-resort type place. I'm not so into that. But it was quite beautiful. Here's a picture:
Vancouver has the best public library. Here's a picture:
It's huge!
-My trip to Canada marked the retirement of my passport. This is the one I got when I moved to Germany ten years ago. It has my German and Moldovan visas, and my nine Romanian stamps. I just received my new one in the mail yesterday, along with the old one. I am so bummed to now have to travel with a blank passport now.
- The Northern Mariana Islands plan is officially off. Not only did I discover that this place is basically one big open sewer pit, but they were not accepting temporary candidates for the summer. I also applied for a temporary job in Okinawa, Japan, but I heard nothing about it. So instead...
-We are officially driving across country this summer. We are going to leave around the first week of July. Tentative stops include eastern oregon, Crazy Horse, Yellowstone, the Badlands, Chi-town, West Virginia, Maine, Montreal, Toronto and who knows where else.
-Have I mentioned that my trip last summer sort of killed my desire to travel again? Not that it wasn't fantastic and amazing and not that I didn't fall in love with Turkey and have fun seeing Szilard and all his friends, but it still drained the life out of me. Just all the ups and downs and illnesses and injuries. The shut down of Heathrow was kind of the last straw. For months, I've had zero interest in getting on an airplane to fly off to an unknown land. However, my travel bug is finally returning. H. and I were watching Globe Trekker tonight with Ian Wright in Cambodia. I found myself thinking, "I want to go there!" Finally, I'm returning to normal. I'm still looking forward to doing a car trip this summer, though. Next summer, I'm sure I'll be ready to leave the continent again.
