But Ariel had the benefit of friends, Sebastian and Flounder, who saw her struggling and were able to drag her up to shore. It wasn't easy, but they did it, and she rocketed out of the water with a splash, gasping in that strange new need for air. Once she got used to it, she settled in a shallow area, and the wonderment of what had happened settled over her. She pushed the hair out of her eyes and saw her knees peeking up at her. She settled back and lifted...of all things...her leg. Her honest to goodness leg! She lifted her foot. She wiggled her toes. She couldn't even believe it!
"Well, look at what the catfish dragged in!" called a familiar, chuckling voice, and Scuttle swooped in. "Look at ya! Look at ya! There's something different! Don't tell me, I got it! It's your hair-do, right? You've been using the dinglehopper, right?"
Delighted, Ariel shook her head, and Scuttle went back to thinking. "No? No, huh? Well, let me see. New...seashells?" Ariel shook her head and tried to shake her new appendages as a hint. "I gotta admit, I can't put my foot on it right now, but if I stand here long enough, maybe I--"
"She's got legs, you idiot," Sebastian called out from a nearby rock. "She traded her voice to the sea witch and got legs. Geez, mon!"
"I knew that," Scuttle waved a dismissive wing.
"Ariel's been turned into a human!" Flounder added helpfully. "She's got to make someone fall in love with her, and he's gotta...he's gotta kiss her!"
"And she's only got three months!"
As they were talking, Ariel was trying out her new legs, which were quite the experience. And the attempt was quite a failure, her knees knobbly and knocking, and eventually she fell, but she was going to get right back up again.
"Just look at her!" Sebastian waved his hands with exasperation. "On legs! On human legs! Oohh, my nerves are shot! This is a catastrophe! What would her father say? I'll tell you what her father'd say. He'd say he's going to kill himself a crab, that's what her father'd say. I'm gonna march meself straight home right now and tell him and--don't you shake your head at me, young lady!" Because that's what Ariel was doing at that threat, swiping him up and trying to convince him as hard as she could that he mustn't do that. "Maybe there's still time. If we can get that witch, and get her to give you back your voice, you can go home with all the normal fish and just be...and just be..."
One look at Ariel's face, and he deflated. "...just be miserable for the rest of your life." He sighed. "All right, all right, I'll let you do this ting..."
Smiling, Ariel leaned over and kissed Sebastian on the cheek before setting him down. "What a soft shell I'm turning out to be..."
And then it was Scuttle's turn. "Now, Ariel, I'm telling you, if you want to be a human, the first thing you've got to do is dress like one."
Luckily, there was some cloth, right there, in the form of sail. Just a wee bit of working and wrapping, and...
Scuttle whistled at this vision draped in canvas. "Ya look great, kid. You look sen-sational! Now...go get 'em."
