Home again, home again. And other things.

First of all, I've added some people to my flist, so welcome new friends! *hugs*

Okay, so I haven't done a proper real life update post for a while--not counting the massive freak-outs over PhD schools. So here's what's been going in the past two weeks.

As I mentioned, my cousin Michelle and her family are moving to Savannah, so I went to her going away party. It was a lot of fun, but it reminded me why I can no longer live in a small town. It's one of those towns where they roll up the street at 9 pm. The place is frozen in time. When I went into Rite Aid to get some supplies for the party, I ran into a much older version of Betty, the lady who use to work at the little mom and pop pharmacy my family used to frequent when I was a kid. That particular pharmacy is no longer there, but Betty's still there, looking a bit more frail but otherwise very much the same. And as I was driving to my cousin's house, I saw this guy riding a bike along the street, and I knew who it was before I ever saw his face. It was a friend of mine from back in the day named Ivan. Things had gotten awkward between us after he'd asked me out--I was naive enough back then to have no idea he was into me. I think I really hurt him with my obvious O_o reaction. But anyway, he looks the same, and I think the last time I saw him he was riding down the street on a bike. So yeah. Nothing much ever changes.

We sat around in lawn chairs and consumed copious amounts of alcohol while my cousin's husband cooked up some shrimp, vegetables, and sausage. As it turns out, Michelle isn't the only person moving. At least one other family at the party is packing up for Florida as soon as the husband gets his expected lay-off next week. I went to high school with the husband.

I told Michelle that I was looking at at least one school that would put me around four and a half hours away from her. She was super-excited. She's already like, "we could meet halfway, so neither of us has to drive so far." Like I mentioned, we've been more like sisters all our lives, because we grew up down the road from each other and are only a few years apart. I realized a couple days ago that another of my potential schools is even closer.

What else has been going on? Jury duty ate up most of last week. I only went in the one day, but since I was on call, I couldn't go anywhere unless I was back that night. So basically, I vegged a lot. The day I did go in I had had NO SLEEP and the day was surreal. First of all, they make you fill out a paper where you list your favorite TV shows and stuff. TV shows. Seriously. So me being me, the first show I listed was Leverage. :) They eventually came in and divided us into two groups. One group went to be interviewed for a civil jury. I was taken to be interviewed for a criminal jury. The interview was odd. They interviewed us as a group for the most part. You know, "Do any of you have a pending criminal case? Okay, let the record show that there were no affirmatives." If someone did answer yes, they were taken aside and questioned by the judge and the lawyers. After the judge finished his questions, the lawyers got their chance. And for some of the individual questions? THEY ASKED PEOPLE ABOUT THE TV SHOWS!!!!! Seriously, I was sitting there, half-asleep, and the lawyer is asking some woman what she likes about CSI. And the woman starts rambling on about Gil Grissom and how he shouldn't have left the show, lol. It was bizarre. They filled the jury before they got to me. I wanted to be asked about Leverage. ;)

Well, that's it for now. I'm probably forgetting some stuff, but I just woke up.

rl: family, tv: csi, tv: leverage
