Thanks to
betterthanlegos for pointing this out. It has MADE my 4th of July weekend!!!
WHY COULDN'T IT HAVE HAPPENED WHEN I WAS WRITING MY MASTER'S THESIS?!?! It would have made an epic conclusion.
Rob Liefield is having a major hissy fit over recent developments in X-Factor! This is a VERY abbreviated version of the story:
Okay, so Rob Liefield is a comic book artist. His art is pretty wretched, if you ask me. The limbs of his characters are inordinately large, and the faces of the characters usually have the same expression all the time. Kind of like they just tasted a lemon.
Anyway, years ago, he introduced a warrior character named Shatterstar for Marvel Comics. He grew more and more arrogant and prissy, and then at some point, he and Marvel had a falling out, and he stormed off in true Liefield fashion. The whole thing played out like a sitcom, really.
Other writers/artists took Shatterstar over and started to hint that Shatterstar might have some romantic feelings for his bestest (and very male) friend in the world, Rictor. Rumors and heavily implied scenes surrounded both characters, and their relationship became almost canon for a lot of fans. This went on for several years, and then... Peter David (otherwise known as PAD) got a hold of Rictor. PAD is long known to be gay-friendly, and shortly after he added Rictor to the cast of X-Factor, he semi-outed Rictor during a conversation with another character. PAD even made a point of mentioning Shatterstar during the conversation. Rictor/Shatterstar fans were at their most hopeful in years.
And then Shatterstar FINALLY SHOWED UP! At the end of X-Factor #45, after much drama, Rictor and Shatterstar grabbed each other and kissed.
Now, Rob Liefield is having a HISSY FIT OF EPIC PROPORTIONS!
Here are some highlights (along with my comments):
“… I have nothing against gays, I have gay family, nuthin’ but love here,” (Okay, any commentary that starts with a disclaimer like this is bound to be a doozy.)
This comment was in response to a fan who likes the Rictor/Shatterstar relationship: “Your opinion doesn’t change the fact that it sucks and it’s not a positive move in most fans’ eyes. (Who are "most fans?" I haven't seen a single person who has expressed disapproval.)
“Shatterstar is akin to Maximus in Gladiator. He’s a warrior, a Spartan, and not a gay one.” (WHAT? LOLOLOL!!!)
He also claims that he "can't wait to undo it." (That, of course, would require Marvel Comics actually letting him within a hundred feet of the character.)
And he seems to be ignoring the fact that Shatterstar's other creator, Fabian Nicieza, is at least partially responsible for the early implications in Ric's and Star's relationship.
So to recap:
1. Rob Liefield is once again proving to the comic-reading public that he is an arrogant buffoon.
2. Rictor and Shatterstar are official.
3. It's 2 pm, and I still haven't had breakfast. But I'm cheerful, because this drama llama makes me happy!
