Poetry poll

I'm reading T.S. Eliot right now, and though I do enjoy it, I'm reminded that sometimes I think rhyming poetry is overdone and clumsy. Even a couple of Eliot's poems seemed awkward to me. On the other hand, I love Byron and Keats and many other poets through the ages who have used rhyme quite well. Overall, though, I'm suspicious of poetry that ( Read more... )

I guess it depends on the poet and how good they are at pulling off rhyming poetry. I tend to write poetry rhyming myself.

I think part of my tentativeness when it comes to rhyming poetry comes from when I used to edit a literary journal, and we used to see all manner of poorly written rhyming poems. Eek!

I don't like rhyming poems or anything that rhymes actually. XP

I also would like to point out that I'm not a big fan of poems and my favorite poem actually is the only poem I've ever liked. And the reason I like it is because a scottish guy read it in a movie... I am never going to understand poems...

This is a debate my best friend and I get into all the time. He abhors poetry that rhymes and avoids it at all costs. I don't mind rhyming poetry as long as it doesn't seem forced/awkward. I tend to pay more attention to the rhythm of the lines and how it all flows together.

Most of the poetry I used to write fell into awkward rhyming patterns that I'm kind of embarrassed about...but after I got into 4poetry (before it turned into a depository of high school drama...I miss the good days of that comm *sigh*) I started caring more about the flow of a poem instead of it fitting into nice, neat rhyming schemes. If that makes sense...

Also, E.E. Cummings totally corrupted me.

Yes! Unfortunately, I think a lot of the problem with the bad poetry I read as an lit mag editor was that the writers were more focused on finding two words to rhyme than on the overall flow of the piece.

Yeah, the poem suffers when it's all about the rhyming.

As a rule, I don't generally like poetry. I like songs, but I'm not sure if you're considering those poetry or not. I don't read poetry. I like poetry to be performed, either as a song or slam poetry or whatever. Though at the moment, slam poetry makes me sad, because a good number of my friends take part, and one of them, the boyfriend of a good friend of mine, died last week. And I can't be there since I'm in England rather than Canada right now, but they're in the middle of organizing a poetry show tribute to him that I wish I could attend.

None of the above. I read both, plus some that rhymes in some places and doesn't in others. :-P
