1. Most of you know that I love comic books, but what a lot of you might not know is that I wrote my Master's thesis on the representation of LGBT characters in mainstream superhero comic books.
2. I grew up reading and cherishing Madeline L'Engel's Wrinkle in Time series, and I credit her for being at least partially responsible for my lifelong interest in science fiction.
3. When I was in grade school, I was such an advanced speller, that my 6th grade teacher decided to put me in a spelling bee against the entire class, a spelling bee which I won. As you can imagine, that didn't do much for my social life, but I did win a pumpkin.
4. I grew up in a railroading town, and my dad was a railroader. I used to walk the tracks when I was a kid and imagine where I'd wind up if I just kept walking.
5. I realized I wanted to be a writer when my 1st grade teacher told me my story about a boy and his fire engine was so good that she wanted to take it home and copy it down. That brush with "fame" got me hooked on writing for others. My next great "novel" (notebook paper folded up into squares and stapled together) was about a mutant spider attacking college kids. I don't recall if that got me the accolades that my fire engine epic did.
6. I used to sing gospel songs acapella in church.
7. Thanks to my parents, I grew up listening to everything from 50s do-wop to bluegrass to flamenco music to Pink Floyd. To this day, I still have diverse and slightly off-the-wall musical tastes.
8. I like my pizza with green olives and pineapples.
