Okay, I'm exhausted, due to my asshat neighbors. They finally settled down at 6 something, but I couldn't fall asleep until 7. I had to get up at 9, so I'm going on 2 hours of sleep. I'm fighting the urge to go back to bed, though, because if I do that, I won't sleep tonight.
Anyway, I'm not too tired to go fangirly on your asses, and I have plenty to go fangirly about! :D
The previews:
Yes, they get their own entry!
I'm super-excited about The Spirit. It looks cool, and Gabriel Macht is starring.
I'm banzai crazy excited about the upcoming Mummy sequel! Brenden Frasier, John Hannah, and Jet Li, I love you!!!!!!!! From the look of the previews, it looks like it's going to be incredibly cool. The visuals are amazing, and the cast is as goofy and lovable as ever. My excitement for this is on the level of what I feel when a new comic book film or a new Stargate film comes out.
And they showed the X-Files preview!!! *thunk*
The movie:
IT WAS AMAZING!
Now this is more like it. When I went to see the first Hulk film, I took my friend, Jonathan, with me. He seemed to like it. Of course, that could've been because he was hot for Eric Bana. I don't know. When we got outside, he was like, "So, you're the comic expert. What did you think?" I gave him a deer in the headlights and said something like, "Well, it's a little different from the books... I liked the desert chase scene." That's pretty much been my stock answer when people mention the first film: "I liked the desert chase scene." After I found out they were making the new one with Ed Norton, my stock response became, "Well, the new one is with Ed Norton, and he doesn't do crap films." And I was right.
What I loved about this film was that it updated the story without losing the essence of the book. That's what you have to do with a comic book movie. My friend, Paul, always says, "Well, they're appealing to the moviegoers, not the comic fans." Rubbish. They're trying to appeal to both, but if they lose the comic audience, they might as well stop making the films. With the Hulk, you have the added complications of echoing the old series with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferigno, too. Overall, I think they did a great job of blending the different parts of the Hulk myth together.
The recastings were fantastic all across the board. Norton, Tyler, and Hurt all sold their characters beautifully, and I felt like they completely shook off the aftertaste of the first film. The chemistry between Tyler and Norton was natural, and I really believed they were in love.
Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky/The Abomination was a brilliant piece of casting. I loved the dissolution of Blonsky's sanity, and the way Roth portrayed his thirst for power and adrenaline.
The cameos were, of course, wonderful and not cheesy. I liked the way they set up the Captain America movie with the super-soldier backstory, and I loved the way Stark waltzed in and dangled the Avengers in front of Ross.
My one quibble is the sparse use of Ty Burrell as Leonard Samson. The previews seemed to show Bruce and Leonard interacting, and I'm bummed we didn't see that. Hopefully, it'll wind up on the DVD extra scenes. Also, I would have liked to have seen Leonard actually get dosed with gamma radiation and become Doc Samson. Next movie, hopefully. For those of you who aren't familiar with the book, that psychiatrist Betty was dating when Bruce got there is Doctor Leonard Samson. In the books, he's a friend of Banner's and actually becomes a superhero when he is exposed to gamma radiation.
But all in all, this was an incredible film. According to IMDB, it did a respectable 54 million opening weekend (which is way more than most films make), and there were a ton of people there today. I was worried it wouldn't do this well, considering a lot of people disliked the first one.
