Summary: Two sisters, liking a boy? Or was the older sister Hiroko thinking to much? Thinking that her precious little sister likes her best friend? But...it was said that her sister only likes tall and muscular boys. That doesn't fit Chinen Yuri now right?
 “What kinds of boys do you like Hami?” I asked.
“He has to be tall, handsome and muscular!” Says Hami. My cute six year old little sister was definitely my pride and obsession. Hami’s seven years younger than me, the perfect little sister I’ve ever wanted. Her real name’s Honami, but I like to call her Hami. It fits her more as she looks like a cute hamster with those stuffy cheeks she use to stuff food with.
As we grew up, I was always looking over her while in return, she looks up at me. That’s how we sisters work.
Seven years later, I was sent to a boarding school overseas. I was torn apart with my sister and was sent to Japan. I didn’t want to leave her, but…Studying overboard was my wish and dream. I’m not letting it go no matter what.
“Visit me okay?” I told Hami.
“Okay…” Says Hami. She’s already thirteen years old. Old enough to take care of herself, I guess she became somewhat quiet and independent.
“You’ll love Japan.” I smiled at her. She just nodded while tears poured out her eyes.
“Don’t cry…it’s a happy thing! We’ll see each other soon.” I patted her head, man…I hate it when she cries.
“Bye,” I said. Hami stood there, sniffing.
~~~
A year later in Japan, everyday was the same, nothing to look forward to, except for the arrival of my sister in a month.
It was a typical Monday; I was just getting off the bus to the school dormitory. Surprisingly, a boy from the same university as me came off the bus, too.
“Hey.” He smiled, “Karasuma Hiroko right?”
“Yes?” I asked.
“Nice to meet you! I saw your drawings yesterday, I thought they were awesome! I guess I wanted to be an artist when I grew up…But I was in lack of creativity. You’re from the English department right? I took some classes, too. Ugh, English is so hard.” He shuddered.
“You saw my drawings?” I asked.
“Yes, they were awesome…I mean, I just…Well, your drawing book was left on the floor with your name and address…I thought I’ll bring it to you. I didn’t mean to peek! I’m so sorry. AH! By the way, my name’s Chinen Yuri! I’m from the performing arts department. I’m a sophomore.” He smacked his head.
“Ha ha, it’s cool.” I smiled.
“Let’s be friends!” Yuri held out his hand.
“But I’m two years older than you.”
“It’s okay! I like older girls anyway.” He shrugged.
“Okay…” I laughed.
“Here’s my phone number, call me! Maybe you can teach me English, too. Let’s hang out sometimes and draw stuff.” He tip toed and gave me a quick pat on the head before leaving.
Yuri and I have been almost together every day. He’ll come over to my dorm and we’ll study. Or we’ll hang out on the school compound during classes and chat about what’s happening. He’ll walk me home sometimes or wait for me at the bus stop.
~~~
A month passed.
“My sister is coming here today. I have to go pick her up. Want to come?” I asked.
“You mean Hami? Yeah! I want to meet her in person! Is it true that her cheeks are really soft and stretchable? Oh, I’m so jealous!” Yuri smiled.
“She’s a real pain once you meet her.”
“But you love her right? I’ll love her too! I always wanted a little sister.” He said.
“Ha ha, you can have her then.” I laughed.
“I thought you said she only liked tall, handsome and muscular boys…” Yuri pouted.
“So true, poor you!” I smiled.
“Poor me…Let’s go now shall we? We don’t want to be late!” He held onto my hand and dragged me onto the taxi.
I blushed.
“Wow, I’ve never been in a real airport before. I wanted to be a pilot when I was young…But I wouldn’t have a chance anyway, since I’m destined to be really short and can’t reach the height limit to be a pilot. Maybe you can be one!” He looked up at me.
Ba-dump “You’ll make a wonderful pilot, a beautiful one, too. I’ll fall heads over heels for such a pretty pilot.” He chuckled.
Ba-dump Ba-dump “Hey! Is that one Hami?” Yuri pointed at a girl with a carrying a blue star bag.
“Oh, it is her.” I was still blushing from the words he said. He really is pure and innocent, saying such sweet words and feeling nothing about it. He sure knows how to catch a girl’s heart well. I envy him. Life must be really easy and happy.
“Hiro-chan!” Hami rushed towards me as I waved.
“Hey. You’ve grown…taller.” I ruffled her hair.
“Of course, I want to be as tall as you! So that I won’t look short with my future boyfriend.” Hami smiled.
“You’re only fourteen girl.” I shook my head. Teenagers these days.
“Who’s he…” Hami locked eyes with Yuri.
“Hi, nice to meet you, I’m Chinen Yuri! Your sister’s best friend.” He smiled as my sister.
“Best friend eh?” Hami laughed.
“What?” I asked.
“That.” Hami pointed at our entwined hands. Crap, I forgot all about that since we got on the taxi.
“We’re just friends Hami.” I rolled my eyes.
“I know…Friends.” She laughed. I didn’t hesitate to pinch her cheeks. I miss her soft cheeks; just squeezing it makes my day all better.
“Hey! I’m not a kid anymore; you got to stop doing that.” Hami pulled my hands off. A soft laughing sound came from beside us.
“What now?” I asked Yuri.
“Hami, can I be your older brother?” Yuri asked.
“Sure, but in return…You have to treat me to something.” Hami smiled.
“Anything!”
“Ice cream!” Hami smiled.
“Bubblegum flavored?” Yuri asked.
“They’re my favorite!” Hami smiled. What surprised me was how well they acted towards each other; I thought Hami would hate me for replacing her for Yuri. But another thing that surprised me more was the quick hug Yuri gave Hami. Why am I…jealous?
“Break it off you two, let’s go already.” I pulled Hami off of him.
“Ha ha, yeah!” They both laughed.
“Are you really a university student Chinen Yuri?” I asked him. He chose to ignore it and started chatting away with my precious sister Hami.
~~~
“Today was fun. See you guys later.” Yuri smiled and walked away after we got back to the dormitory.
“He’s not so bad. I approve.” Hami gave me a thumb up.
“Huh?” I asked.
“I approve of him to be your boyfriend. I can see the jealousy in your eyes when we hugged and how he chatted to me. You’re in love sis.” Hami hugged me before hopping on the bed. “I’m sleeping here tonight!” She closed the lights.
~~~
“Huh? Okay, sure! See you.” Hami shut the phone off.
It was next morning; I wake up and see my sister talking on my phone.
“Who are you talking to?” I asked.
“Yuri.” Hami replied, a soft smile on her face.
“Him? And…?” I asked, ignoring the fact that she was daydreaming.
“You’re going on a picnic with him today!” Hami screamed.
“Me? But I have classes today…” I looked disappointed; no doubt that Hami was disappointed, too.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” She looked down.
“That’s okay. Just cancel it.” I replied, patting her head. She’s cute and sweet, understandable and cute. Wait? Did I say that already?
“Un.” She nodded, leaving the room.
“But…I really would like to go on a picnic with him. Someday.” I muttered.
It didn’t take long for me to dress myself, in a dash I grabbed a piece of toast and ran out of the dorm.
“I’ll be back by lunch. Don’t go anywhere.” I called.
~~~
I told her not to go anywhere, but where is she? She left without a note, a call! I was angry, furious. But I know, deep inside that I was worried that Hami was with Yuri. Happily enjoying the picnic without me, laughing and talking, I was scared that it’ll happen, scared that I’m jealous of my own sister. Why should I be jealous? Because I’m in love, right? WRONG. I am not in love; I do not like Chinen Yuri. He’s just a friend. Just then, a boy and a girl got off of a bus.
Chinen and Hami.
“Where were you? I thought I told you not to go anywhere! You scared me!” I shouted, letting anger out. I’ve never been this angry, at anyone and not to mention my own sister. I can see the fear in her eyes and that she’s about the say something, but I’m not taking no for an answer.
“But--” Hami stuttered, glancing at Yuri. I got angrier.
“Go into the dorm, NOW.” I gritted my teeth. The two of them standing together pisses me off. She didn’t tell me she was going out with him; she even said she would cancel it.
“And you…You…Did you take her out?” I glared at him.
“Yes.” He said.
“Did she tell you I have classes?” I asked.
“Yes. I asked her out, she’ll be bored at home. And she’s alone. What if something happens?”He replied calmly.
“What if something happens? That something already happened! And it’s all because of you, yes YOU! Chinen Yuri…I wouldn’t be yelling at you! Everyone wouldn’t be sad over something you did! You could have stayed with her at home or contact me is fine! And most of all, I got scared she got kidnapped!” I screamed. I was a bit over, I shouldn’t say so much. He was hurt.
“…” he looked at me.
“I don’t want to hang out with someone who puts my sister’s life ahead of my emotions! Did you know how I felt when I didn’t find her home? Did you?” I yelled, tears pouring out of my eyes. I hinted him, if he’s smart enough he’ll know that I put my feelings into it. I said I loved him…Or more like I was just jealous…
“Hey, girls don’t look good when they cry. Especially girls like you.” He held me in his arms. I pushed him away. And instantly the words came out of my mouth.
“You don’t have siblings; you don’t know how much I thought I’d lose her!” I screamed.
“I know, I don’t have siblings but you don’t have to rub it in my face! Didn’t I tell you Hami’s part of my sister now? It’s my duty to take care of her, too! Take her out when you don’t have time! She has the choice to choose! She wanted to come out, and I took her out! I know I was wrong, just GIVE ME THE CHANCE TO APOLOGIZE!” Yuri stared at me. I stared at him. We stared at each other until Hami came out. And the staring stopped.
“You’re so self-centered! You live as if everything has to go your way! You understood me, I thought you did! I can’t stay at home all day waiting for you! You should know that! You should know I would be with Yuri! He’s the only other person I know…You’re just stubborn and wanted something to yell at!” Hami cried.
“You’re right. I don’t know you. You’ve changed so much in a year, that I don’t recognize you anymore. And yes, I am stubborn and wanted something to yell at. That’s me. But have you thought about yourself? THE WAY YOU SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME? I love you Hami! You’re my precious sister! Anything can happen! I was just protecting you!” I replied her.
“You’re sister has a reason.” Yuri looked at Hami.
“Don’t butt into this. Run along and go home!” I screamed.
He didn’t utter a word and slowly walked away.
“YOU LOVE HIM!” Hami screamed at me and ran after Yuri.
~~~
I’m self centered? I keep on repeating the words my own sister told me, I don’t understand her? I thought I did…I knew I did…But I didn’t? I was frustrated. Unable to do my homework, I went out for a walk. It was dark and the wind was big, I wonder what Hami is doing with Yuri. I hope he’s taking good care of her. I sat down by the river bank and stared into nothing. I heard voices.
“It’s not good of you to say that to your sister.” It must be Yuri. I listened on.
“I can’t help it. She’s totally gone over.” Hami replied.
“Was she like that before?”
“No. She was really nice before. Letting me do everything and anything.” Hami said.
“She’s just worried about you. You should go say sorry.” Yuri said.
“She’ll just start yelling at me again.”
“She’s stubborn, but that’s her. She does what’s right. I remember the time when we went out to eat; a kid was outside of a bookstore. Hiro-chan didn’t hesitate to ask what’s wrong. In the end, she helped the kid. The kid’s mother was in the bookstore and didn’t come out for a long time. Hiro-chan went in and found the mother smoking and reading a magazine. Not caring that her child was outside in the cold waiting for her mother. Hiro-chan taught the mother a lesson. Everything turned out okay.” Yuri chuckled a bit.
“Oh. You tolerate her stubbornness?” Hami asked.
“It’s not just tolerating, I love it. Being stubborn is part of Hiroko. Without her stubbornness, she isn’t Hiroko.” Yuri was talking slowly, letting the breeze hit his face probably.
“You like my sister?” Hami said.
“Yeah. I do, I’ve liked her ever since I met her. At first, I fell in love with her drawings, then her and now…her stubbornness. You’re so cute! So independent and understanding.” Yuri laughed. I could hear the giggling from Hami, they’re having fun. I wish I could join them. But it’d be like I was eavesdropping and I already know what I needed to know now…
Chinen Yuri likes me.
He likes my stubbornness.
I blushed and smiled madly in the dark, I could have sworn the smile was as wide as my face. So what if I’m self-centered? I got what I wanted and maybe even more than what I expected.
~~~
After hearing Yuri and Hami’s talk, everything’s been back to normal. The next few days, Hami laughed with me and joked with me, my precious sister forgot about a thing. I accepted her apology when she came to me and she accepted mine, which is why we’re back to normal.
Hami was leaving today. Two weeks past so fast…Yuri and I were bidding her goodbye at the airport.
“I’m totally coming here again!” Hami smiled.
“Yes, see you then! Take care of yourself back home.” I hugged her.
“Yeah, take care, Hami.” Yuri hugged her, too. And then they whispered something before letting go of each other.
My heart twitched.
“Karasuma Honami…” Yuri bent down on one knee and kissed Hami’s hand. Hami who was standing beside me, was smiling widely.
What’s happening?
I thought Yuri liked me?
What is he doing? Is it part of the farewell? “Yes, Chinen Yuri?” Hami asked, motioning him to stand up.
“May I be your real brother in law?” He winked at me. They both looked at me.
“What? Go on…” I eyed them. They were looking at me with those big eyes.
“Can I be your brother in law?” Yuri repeated, coughing slightly. Hami stared at me.
“What do you want me to say?” I raised an eyebrow. I do not understand this; they’re making it move so slowly I can’t stand looking at them in that position. Isn’t Yuri going to just ask her out? Gosh, can’t she just say yes?
Yuri coughed loudly and sighed.
“CAN I DATE YOUR SISTER KARASUMA HIROKO?” Yuri looked at me and waited for an answer.
“Sure, go date my sister! Whoo.” I twirled my hair.
“Hiroko!! Yuri’s been telling you he wants to marry you for three times already! Are you telling me you’re rejecting him?” Hami said.
“Huh? But I thought…You were going to date Hami! You just said it!” I looked at Yuri. He laughed lightly.
“You really are self-centered.” Yuri hugged me from the waist.
“…” I was speechless.
“But I still love you.” He smiled and pecked my lips lightly, with hands still around my waist.
“Well? What are you waiting for? Say yes! I’m catching a plane here, I might be late…” Hami puffed out her cheeks.
“YES! I agree Yuri! Let’s be a couple! Husband and wife! Together! And forget about that plane, you can live in Japan Hami!” I screamed, hugging Yuri greedily.
“Ugh, Yuri…I insist you get some muscles and get taller if you’re going to be her brother in law.” I eyed Hami and she laughed, remembering the talk eight years ago.
“Yeah, totally.” Hami said.
“HEY! I thought you accepted me! I treated you to ice cream!” Yuri pouted.
“Well, that’s not enough.” Hami laughed.
