The other day I caught "The Doctor's Wife" re-running on BBCA and realized that I never really posted my thoughts on the rest of s6a after the premiere--and with the show coming back in less than a week (!), I figure I should do that sooner rather than later...
First off, "The Doctor's Wife" was amazing and by far the best of the season, maybe even the Moffat era. It felt a lot like RTD!Who, with all the emotions and exploring the Doctor's character more in-depth, plus you know, the RT(AR)DIS console room I've missed so! ;) I also just loved the celebration of the show mythos, exploring this central but often overlooked beautiful relationship between the Doctor and his beloved bb TARDIS! What a neat, wonderful concept, I'd love to see this in SN with the Impala come to life in "Dean's Wife"! :p And I loved all the callbacks to the Time War and actually seeing Eleven angst a bit, and the Rory/Amy bits were great too, I loved seeing again some emotion from Amy over Rory and shippiness there--the whole mind games were just really interesting and well done, poor Fake!Rory though...:( And yeesh was House scary, I thought his voice sounded just like the 456 in COE, so I was extra creeped-out. I just hope though that the TARDIS managed to put back the coral console room into the archive, it'd break my heart for that to be gone forever! In short, Neil Gaiman needs to write more epps of DW, I think he has a really good handle on it...
As for the rest of the season...meh, IDK. I have to say, I did enjoy this season more than last in that I actually grew to like all the characters more--especially Amy, who I do now love, especially now that they've toned her down with her rewritten past, and even River as they fleshed her out a little so she wasn't just purely a plot device/clever cipher as much. Though wow was her "reveal" pretty lame and anticlimactic, I mean anyone who had read any theories had seen the one that she was Amy and Rory's baby (even though it makes no sense), so that hardly wowed me....though it was nice to see that she knows the Doctor's name because she can read Gallifreyan off his crib, not because he told her because she's ~extra special to him/his wife or whatever. Even though i still don't think her being part Time Lord and able to read Gallifreyan really makes sense...I agree with those though that think they should have made the end of the Flesh two-parter the end of season 6a, because the reveal that Amy was not actually there but only a ganger was actually mind-blowing and exciting, unliek the River reveal.
The Flesh epps were not my faves, though they did actually help me understand Cloen (and how he could be the same person as The Doctor, but separate) a lot better, so yay for that! (Still struggling with the end of JE even now, so every bit of help is much appreciated). The mermaid epp was boring, though it had some really snappy and funny lines by Eleven. They really need to stop killing Rory now though, JS, he's giving Sam and Dean a run for their money in that department...;) And I don't even remember what episode 3 was about....O_o
I'm apprehensive about the storyline in the second half though, because I really want to see Amy and Rory raising their baby, and I don't know how they can do that....nor do I have faith that Moffat can actually resolve everything sensically. I also really hope that Amy and Rory exit this season, go on and settle down, because I think it's time to move on and experience some new companions for Eleven to interact with. I know that Gillian said she's going to be in s7, but I hope it's just a la Martha, you know, coming on to visit in spots. I don't want to say goodbye to Amy and Rory forever...
NGL though, the thing I'm most excited for next season though is the reports that we'll glimpse Rose and Martha and Donna in the s6b premiere!!! :D You know, as if those people actually existed! I died when we saw the old console room, I can't imagine how I'll react seeing my old favorite companions, hope it's well done and that we'll actually be able to see them without having to resort to screencaps (unlike in "The Lodger"). So curious about that....
I've also been recently doing some Classic Who watching in an attempt to check out other Doctors...
I have to say I was rather disappointed by The Five Doctors, I had heard it was so good, but I mostly just found it lame and cheesy and boring, even though it was interesting to see so many Doctors at once, and I did love seeing Sarah Jane again (and K9!), even if it made me sob inside....I feel I perhaps would have appreciated it all more had I you know, actually known who most of these people were...
Genesis of the Daleks, on the other hand, has indeed lived up to the hype so far, and not disappointed! I just find the plot so interesting since it actually gives the backstory of something I *am* familiar with, Davros and the creation of the Daleks, which is fascinating to see, knowing what is coming later (especially where Davros is concerned)....the whole thing has an air of tragic inevitability and doom, which I love, and I like seeing the original peoples on Skaro. What can I say, I love prequels! (Even 2/3 of the SW ones, DEAL WITH IT). And Sarah Jane is in it being a BAMF, and I'm enjoying Four ("NO TEA?!" lol), especially since
I saw/met Tom Baker in person that one time and it was nice to actually see him playing the role more!
And over the summer I've done a fair bit of RTD!NuWho rewatching as well, now that I have been happily reunited with all my s1-4 DVDs, including introducing a half-British RL friend to her own culture the show! ;) I've definitely noticed some new things, but mostly just feel all nostalgic for the good old days when I watch the epps; for me s1-4 is and always will be the Doctor Who that I truly love and enjoy most...
First off, I have to say, you kind of view all the destruction of the shops and fires and chaos in "Rose" a little differently after the recent London Riots, I must say! O_o I also noticed this time in "Bad Wolf" how we get a scene of The Doctor and Jack seeing Rose's jacket draped over a coral bit in The TARDIS and angsting over it while they think Rose is dead, which is so reminiscent of Ten seeing Rose's jacket in "The Runaway Bride" (which I also rewatched)! Darn Rose, always leaving her jacket around the TARDIS to provoke angst! ;)
Also lol poor Jack only ever gets hugged by the Doctor when it's in excitement about Rose still being alive, sucker! :p And man do the Doctor's eyes look completely dead and hollow when Nine looks at Rose's supposed ashes, I honestly do think he can give Ten a run for his money in that department...(since I saw a comparison done on this recently).
I also rewatched "The Impossible Planet"/"The Satan Pit" since I hear so much love for them and really disliked them the first time around, and while I still do dislike the general plot, I did come to appreciate these epps a lot more (and they are super!shippy!). "The Girl in the Fireplace" is just the WORST though, even with all my love for Sophia Myles! :/
Finally, looking at the DVD cases for s1-2 I noticed where the Doctor's hands were each time, and it made me LOL! :D
Yeah you're just ~protecting her, sure, Doctor! ;) Lol they're almost in the exact same positions in each of these promos...
Speaking of DW, I also recently discovered the most amazing thing ever:
SUPERWHO, the fandom marriage of Supernatural and Doctor Who on Tumblr! <333
I love it so much, it's like my two favorite shows combined as one! :DDDD (And some of these mannippers have mad talent!)
Also speaking of epic, amazing things produced by fandom, there is now a
game in which you make Harry/Hermione kiss, as much as possible! :p I can't even, lol, my ship has a kissing game, it's the best thing ever, I'm already addicted (plus it's pretty/hot to watch!).
