The Tree: A Young!Morgana Ficlet

Apr 04, 2010 02:31

Oh the things I will do for Team Morgana on merlin_land! :)  Here is a little ficlet I wrote for a challenge there, in which I incorporated the prompts for "tree" and "storm."

Title: "The Tree"
Rating: G
Pairing: None
Word Count: 269
Disclaimer: I do not own "Merlin" or any of its characters.  This is written only for fun, not profit.
Summary: Morgana loved the old oak tree by her home, until that fateful day that changed everything for her.
Notes/Warnings: No spoilers.  The extra background info on Morgana, such as her living at Tintagel Castle, is based on the legend.   And thanks to ink_maid  for beta-ing!

It began with a tree.

It was a great oak tree, ancient and gnarled, planted by some distant ancestor in time immemorial. Morgana had grown up with this tree, had spent many hours sprawled underneath its branches, enjoying its cool shade in the summertime, and its vibrantly colored leaves in autumn. She loved to trace her fingers along the rough bark, and across the messages carved there by past lovers. It was her favorite place to retreat to when she needed some time alone.

It was also where Morgana always went to catch the first glimpse of her father when he returned home from war and other travels. From its vantage point on the hill near Tintagel, Morgana had a clear view of the road leading up to the front gate of the castle. Her father knew to look for Morgana there as he approached, smiling and waving at her. Morgana lived on those smiles. She could hardly bear the times when her father went away.

In her first nightmare that came true, she saw the tree amidst a storm.

It was pouring outside as Morgana stood at her usual post by the tree that day, but the rain did not matter to her, not when her father was coming home. She huddled under her cloak and waited patiently. Waited for that cherished first glimpse, for that smile she lived for.

But it never came. In the place of her father on his black steed at the front of his men, there was only a covered cart, surrounded by somber faces.

Morgana never visited the tree again.

Feedback always appreciated. :)
