Things have been chugging along nicely of late. I'm nearly finished dealing with the bathroom, despite the fact that the initial paint color turned out way too dark and had to be redone. The new light fixture is up (no more ugliest fixture ever!), as are the new towel ring and bar. Unfortunately, I accidentally drilled the wrong placement holes for the towel ring, so there's yet another patch job to do before it's all over. But, all that's left is that, painting the window and door, hanging the blinds, cleaning the cabinets and replacing the hardware, and cleaning up all the mess I made as part of the process. It sounds like a lot, but no one thing will take all that long (aside from the mess-cleaning), so I think that maybe by the end of this coming weekend, we'll have the master bathroom back. I even found some new towels in exactly the right shade of chocolate brown to complement the very light purple of the walls and tie in with the colors in the master bedroom.
Malcolm has shown a few new skills recently as well. He's getting better and better with using a regular cup - tonight he drank 3 half cupfuls of water and milk with dinner (and would have had more if I'd let him) and spilled markedly less than yesterday's attempts. All his practicing with the rinsing cup and bathwater (ugh) are paying off, I guess. Stairs are also coming easier for him, and he often barely holds on to the hand of his assistant. He's also begun taking full steps rather than half steps (both feet on each step) on the way up. On top of that, he's been doing showing signs of recognizing things outside of the initial introductory medium. He has a toy from one of his favorite shows and a book from the other, and whenever we turn on YGG he grabs that book and starts looking through it. Just today he did the same thing for the toy and Backyardigans, despite the fact that he barely even looks at the toy otherwise. I think it just clicked for him when Austin popped up on the screen and he looked over and saw that little stuffed wallaby: "Oh, it's Austin!" It's weird to think of him making those little connections - to me, he's still my baby. But I am excited to see those little neurons in action nonetheless.
