Apple of My Eye by Helene Hanff

This was a wonderful book! Hanff writes about New York as only someone who lives there and loves the city could. She may have been touring "tourist attractions", but she sees them through the eyes of a native and her wonderment at the incredible city where she lives shines through.

Hanff's writing style is always enjoyable. Her conversational style is easy to read and get caught up in. Stories of her adventures with her friend while seeing the sights of the Big Apple were charming and engaging.

This book made me want to go to NCY again and just spend some time walking around, exploring. I've seen some of the sights she wrote about, but I'd like to see them again with this background. She also wrote about many sights that I've never visited and would like to. Even the "boring" locations sounded like fun!

The book is dated, and even the P.S. section of updates is out of date now. The references to the World Trade Towers was particularly difficult to read after 9/11/01. However, most of the rest of what she described visiting is still available.

I won't be releasing this book any time soon. I'm going to want to refer to it before my trips to the city, just to refresh my memory and perhaps to encourage me to spend a little extra time enjoying the sights.
