Winter and I arrived in Delhi at 3 am on Monday morning. It was 98 degrees. This city is amazing. Not at all what I ever thought or imagined in all my time spent dreaming about it but nonetheless, incredible. We've visited the eternal flame burning for Gandhi, the father of the country, gone to markets and hindu temples. We visited the Presidents house and the India gate. The Taj Mahal and ride around old Delhi will be saved for when my mother arrives. On Friday we will work with the sisters of charity, caring for the homeless.
We are staying with really good friends who are actually in Nepal at the moment. Their son Jonathan and his cousin Namrada have been showing us around. They are awesome and super hospitable. The heat is insane. Today is 42 degrees which translates to about 117. Known as the dirtiest city on earth, Delhi has actually taken quite a stand against the pollution factor. All public transportation now runs on CNG (compressed natural gas) and I saw stars for the first time since leaving home.
Has anyone seen "the little princess" and remembers how she talks about the spices and smells of India? I always hoped for that but knew the reality of smog and garbage would hit hard. Surprisingly it has not hit at all. Granted, fragrant air and elephant rides through the forest arent exactly what I have experienced, but it smells and looks MUCH cleaner that China- Shanghai and Tankou aside.
Anyway, we are watching a Hindi movie and I am going to join. I hope everyone is well and summer is off to a good start!
