It is a huge problem and dismissing or ignoring it -- like some BBC Sherlock fans seem to be doing a lot of lately -- really doesn't help matters.

In a word: YES.

In two words: THANK YOU.

To put it another way: if they do want to make a feminist statement, they should cast Lucy Liu as Holmes, not Watson.

Because it would make a feminist statement to castrate Holmes?

None of that makes any sense, but the thought that a female Watson is a mutilated male Watson robbed of his bleeding testicles and a female Holmes would be some kind of victory isn't even coherent on its own deranged terms.

Exactly. I think she's be just as rude and ignorant if it was an Asian-American Holmes.

Still, none of that is my favorite for pure Guardian troll thumbsucker op ed WTFery:

I'm a feminist. I'm as excited as the next man when it comes to the breaking of glass ceilings...

There are many reasons to love the Guardian. The Salon-style flamebaiting in their guest columns is not one of them.

ikr? Because that's what feminism is. Trying to sneak into the boy's club. She looks like an idiot, and that's all.
