Major Holmes
by Laura

“Captain Watson,” Sherlock says, sprawled on the sofa.

John, sitting at the desk, recognises the tone for what it is. And what it could be, if they were so inclined. He stops typing. In the tone he used in a previous life (or two) he replies, “Major Holmes?”

One, two… Sherlock clambers off the sofa, comes to stand by the desk. “Not Lieutenant Holmes?”

John looks up at his flatmate. Just one rank below. Sherlock would think like that, wouldn’t he? He decides to be ‘delightfully interesting’. Well, sort of. “Not today.”

Sherlock’s eyes narrow.

“But if you try what you did the other night with that kid with the gun any time again soon…”

Sherlock laughs, because he recognises that tone, too. “I’ll be Officer Cadet Holmes. Quite right,” he says, though, then his expression changes. Fake serious, like John’s seen him act a thousand times. “Captain Watson.”

He somehow manages to keep a straight face. “Yes, Major Holmes, sir?”

“Tea.” The fake serious vanishes, replaced with something else.

“Is that all?” John asks, following him into giggles.

“Yes. And now, captain,” Sherlock eventually manages to get out, before collapsing onto the sofa again.

“Yes, Major Holmes, sir.” They’re ridiculous, sometimes, the two of them. Flicking him a quick ‘salute’, John goes to the kitchen, sets the kettle to boil.
