"Sherlock, are you alright?" she wastes no time in asking.
"Fine, Mrs. Hudson. But I have something...I have a secret to tell you."
"A secret?" her voice is laced with worry - this whole situation just puts him so out of character.
"This case, everything - Moriarty is behind it. Mrs. Hudson, he's threatened to burn me. And I don't think turning me into a fraud will be enough for him. If all goes to plan...tonight, I'm going to be faking my death. And no one can know."
Mrs. Hudson pauses, "Why me? Why not John?"
"He'll be safer if he doesn't know - he can't lie worth a damn, either," Sherlock dismisses.
"Sherlock," Mrs. Hudson scolds - whether for the language or statement about his friend, he can't tell, "And I can?"
"Phone," Sherlock reminds, referring to Irene's most prized possession, smiling.
"Oh, alright," she says, and he can hear a smile in her voice.
"Besides, I don't want to convince you I'm dead and then give you some sort of heart attack when I come back," he adds. She sighs fondly on the end of the line, and there is comfortable silence between them for a moment.
"Mrs. Hudson? Can I ask something of you, while I'm gone?"
"Anything, dear," she says, and it almost brings out another smile.
"Keep an eye on John - and don't let Mycroft do anything stupid."
"I think your brother will be too busy watching John to do anything like that. But I will watch them, both."
"Thank you, Mrs. Hudson." Emotion leaks into the phrase - affection and pride and gratefulness all in the phrase, "I'll see you again as soon as I can."
