No real directions, but this isn't a place for debate. It's a place for RANTIN' AND RAVIN'.

There is a rule: There is to be no calling out anyone by name in Rants, Chatter, or on the Meme itself. This only produces an atmosphere of animosity and it is no longer tolerated. If you see any names being ranted about, please link ( Read more... )

off topic by nature, rants

One should be able to find fics in AO3 by the amount of kudos, not the amount of hits.

I'm reading fics from my new fandom and it would be lovely to find the most well loved fics easily.

If you use the advanced search function, you can limit what you see to only fics with over a certain amount of kudos (or within a certain range of kudos).

You still can't sort from highest to lowest, though, as far as I know, unfortunately.

> 1000 kudos = 12 fics (including one from "Octopus Steals My Video Camera and Swims off with It While It's Recording (Youtube)" fandom wtf) also like, over half of these are sherlock fics.
> 900 = 17 fics (0.005%)
> 800 = 26 fics (0.008%)
> 700 = 37 fics (0.011%)
> 600 = 60 fics (0.018%)
> 500 = 111 fics (0.034%)
> 400 = 193 fics (0.059%)
> 300 = 385 fics (0.119%)
> 200 = 826 fics (0.254%)
> 100 = 2753 fics (0.848%)
Total # fics on AO3 = 324,522

conclusion: i feel like i should graph this. and also sherlock fandom seems to love giving kudos the most.

THE OCTOPUS FIC IS SOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!!!!! It's based on a very popular youtube vid that went viral amongst people who love undersea creatures/cool animals/adventures/the wonders of life, and it was a surprise hit from the most recent Yuletide. It's seriously ridiculous and adorable and aklsdjfklajskdfjlkasjdfkljaklsdjf.

If you graph it, you should totally do ranges. Like:

> 1000
900 - 999
etc.

Sherlock fandom is actually unusually active on AO3, I think. I know a lot of people from other fandoms post there, but more people actually seem to be actively using it as their main source (or one of their main sources) of fanfic in Sherlock fandom.

I can't find the search function. :(

That's because AO3 hides the advanced search button until you've done a normal search, annoyingly.

Here's a direct link to the advanced search page:

I wish it was possible to see how many times the fic had been downloaded, and sort on that.

To my mind that would be even better than kudos *or* comments.

Not necessarily? I often download long fics I haven't read yet to read on my e-reader, and if they turn out to suck I just delete them.

As an author I'd quite like to know that too, but I'm not sure as an indicator of quality it would be much use. I think it would correlate strongly to length of fic: is it short enough to read in one sitting, or shall I download it to read over a longer time period.

Yes, because the most popular fics are DEFINITELY the ones to read. So they become more popular and get more readers and more notice, etc etc.

Popular =/= quality fic.

And yes, I AM bitter. Why not read something that looks interesting to YOU?

nayrt

Because if I'm looking for a probably-good-read and I don't feel like sampling everything in the slush pile, I go to the "classics" section. And when I'm done, I look for something else. It takes me a while to figure out if the interesting:annoying ratio is high enough to bother, and if I only have a half hour to spare, I'd like a quick filter.
