How many comments or kudos do you need to feel your fic has done well? What factors (pairing, rating, etc.) do you consider relevant? At what point do you pack up your toys and go home?

On the meme? I just need at least one, really, though I've never had a fill that got less than two.

The only two things that counteract that are:
1. The OP not responding
2. Getting fewer comments on an update of a WIP than I have on previous updates, especially if there's a logged in user who's consistently commented before

I know there are tons of reasons that these two things can happen that have nothing to do with anyone disliking what I've written, but I still get kind of paranoid.

If I get over 3 comments on a Moriarty/Moran fic I post on LJ/the meme, I consider it a job well done. Strangely enough, it's a lot easier to wheedle comments out of people on Tumblr (although I've stopped posting there because I got sick of the wank, the childishness, and certain people trying to run the ship ( ... )

On the meme:
For John/Sherlock, at least six comments.
For other pairings, at least four.
If it's multiple parts, four per update.

I'm okay with less, but when it gets that many I feel it's a general "well done, fic" marker.

I've never packed my toys and gone home, but I'd probably abandon a WIP that wasn't getting any comments, or that was only getting one per update. If someone started a wank on my fic, I might still finish but I'd probably leave it anonymous because I'd be too embarrassed to claim after that.

On AO3 with the kudos system, I have no idea how to measure "my fic has done well" there. I look at the kudos count in utter confusion.

I only pack up my toys and go home when I no longer get any joy from writing it.

AO3: Hit counts. I'm a bit addicted to them and I consider a fic a bit meh with readers if I get less than 200 hits. Kudos in the double digits make me happy.

FF.net: Comments are nice. Hit counts too. And how many people favourited the fic or added to their C2 list.

Meme: OP likes it and I get more than 2 comments.

Meme: 3-4 comments

AO3: 25 kudos

FF.net: eh, I'm not sure. I have on fic with literally 2 reviews but it's been Favorited 17 times, so...

For relevancy I think that my preferred pairing, I expect to get less comments/kuds/whatever than a Sherlock/John fic because the fanbase isn't quite so big.

Man this is a bummer...I usually only get about 2 comments on my fics and I felt that was good.

OP is sorry, nonnie. It wasn't my intention to make anyone feel shitty about their fills.

I don't read Sherlock/John and believe me, anon.

I don't see that many comments on most of the fills, these people here must be incredibly good writers.

Not necessarily. They just write in the 'right' pairing in a popular way and in an extremely popular fandom.

Yours, a canon ACD writer who gets plenty of praise relatively speaking, but has seen frankly mediocre BBC verse fics on A03 with kudos in three figures and thousands of hits.

I know. I was being a bit sarcastic. Authors who don't write for the 'right' pairing don't usually get all that many comments and very few times a non S/J fill will get four or more comments.

You're so right about kudos.

Whoaaa @ some of these meme comment amounts.

When I wrote a multipart fic on the meme, I scraped by with maybe one or two comments per part. Sometimes none at all. And then I finished and posted off-meme and it now it has thousands of hits and a good couple hundred kudos. I guess what I'm trying to say is try not to give up on multipart stories even when it seems like nobody is reading. Write because the story compels you! <33

LOL WHAT ARE COMMENTS

nah that sounds whiny but the only comments i ever get are from friends lurking my page... actually that's only two comments, i have one fic that has a comment from someone i don't know

i think that's good

i dunno like i don't really care; i know when my writing's good and when it's not. it's nice to get recognition but i'm not going to stop writing because i don't, so, whatever!

Every comment I receive is treasured like a shiny little diamond. Kudos are a better way of gauging how well something's done though since a lot of people have trouble doing words at you when they're impressed and pressing the kudos button is easier. Still it's page views that get my blood pumping the most. On my latest Sherlock fic I got more than 4.000 views in two weeks and I'm sitting here with my hair all messed up screaming WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS GOING ON WHAT, WHAT, JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL at my screen.

I've never stopped writing anything because nobody read it, though. If I did that I'd never have improved at anything.

I've only posted a couple of fills on the meme so i don't really know what a measure of success is for those. I got about 5 comments on each and judging from others' comments i think that's quite good!

On AO3 i think 1 kudos per 25 hits is about my average. I get a happy little feeling in my tummy when i get a comment on any of my fics <3 comments are the best.

I never post WIP's, but i don't think i'd abandon one if it didn't get many comments! I write because it's fun :)
