[temp] Discussion Post

Aug 17, 2010 15:02

Alright, so your head honchos haven't really decided yet whether or not a discussion post would be beneficial to have. HOWEVER, I'm putting this up in regards to an incident that would really benefit from a move, and I don't want to wait for all of us to make an educated decision ( Read more... )

I think the best thing would be making rules about how to post prompts (maybe in a way that the more "offensive" are hidden -whyte over whyte pheraps?-)^^

You could make a post where everyone can participate and contribute with their opinion on how to run things smoothly on the meme? This one was a bit abrupt, there was no explanation on the post about what it was about, but maybe if you make another post and explain your points and your doubts and possible solutions then people will be wiling to discuss.

I don't know, though, just my two cents...I've never run a comm like that.

I know why you did this, it was a good idea! Just that everyone in this comm that doesn't follow the meme probably wondered what was happening (well, I did.) :)

I think you're doing a great job navigating this first bump, Pie. Goodness knows the Star Trek kink meme had its share of wank and survived! I want you to know I really appreciate it. :)

Well I certainly won't be prompting here if you take a mamby pamby lets not offend anyone's delicate sensibilities approach. Prompts will not get prompted and prompts will not get filled if we allow these discussions to take place under prompts. I don't think any prompt should get deleted because you feel ~weird~ about it. I find lots of things offensive but I keep my mouth shut about it because that's what you do in these communities. The purpose is to generate content from prompts not to post about how a prompt offended you. I will start my own prompting place when that happens and you all can move there. Sorry but it needs to be done if you start policing prompts.

But how can you not offend some people? Like the original prompt the person wanted to see Sherlock raped in a dress. How could you word that to not have it be offensive. Policing people's language will just make people afraid to prompt. You can never know what will be offensive to someone. I think you should take a hands off approach to it like most kink memes do. I understand having a header rule for triggery content but nothing more. That should be the absolute bare minimum.

So never, ever try to be remotely unoffensive, ever, because SOMEONE might be offended?

That's ridiculous. You can never guarantee not being offensive to everyone, no, but you can do your damndest to minimise it for people and ensure that a balance is struck. It takes five seconds to think, hmmm, could I phrase this better? We're hardly asking the Earth here when we ask that rape isn't treated with 'lol'.

Incidentally, the idea most kink memes take a hands off approach is bullshit. Mods tend to get a million and one PMs complaining and pointing things out and downright being abusive, you can't just sit and do nothing about that. To say it's hands off is rather insulting to our mod here.

tl;dr not wanting a serious real life issue many readers have personal experience with to be laughed about in public is not namby-pambying, what the fuck is this even.

I want prompts to actually be filled not to have to read endless tldr about people's issues with wording and how it's offensive to them. Sorry.

Then stop reading this post which is addressing that. It's not on the main prompt post. It's super-easy to avoid.

I want to feel like I'm not surrounded by people who mock rape, and to just get on with having fun reading the fic I want. Sorry.

Shame you're not entitled to people not speaking up on offensive issues! Because get this: you aren't. I don't care if a stranger on the internet doesn't feel like knowing I was offended by something said by someone else. If that stranger, i.e. you, doesn't like it, tough shit. I'm not here to do what you want. I'm not here to accomodate the fact you think you're ~oppressed~ when someone objects. End of.

Also, perhaps you should consider why it is so very, very important you be allowed to make jokes about rape in public without fear of criticism. Because you seem very devoted to this allowance being made, and it's worth considering why you would leave somewhere over people being allowed to call it out.

da Prompting fic communities shouldn't devolve into meta discussions. They are useful elsewhere but not on a kink and prompting meme. It is trolling because it disrupts the community and leads to fighting and divisiveness as this discussion has already shown. I don't want to see that on the prompting post.
