Did it occur to you that, having been fairly well immersed in (a) feminist (sub)culture for quite a long time, one which (to my occasional chagrin) I value, I might choose to express weariness and disaffection with its often-empty formalities

I'm pretty certain it didn't occur to the anon you replied to, just as it didn't occur to me, for the very simple reason of you not saying anything like that. We don't know who you are. It's great you're immersed in feminism and value it, so do I -- but how on earth could anyone know that from one line saying ~"Not unless you really need them, and this isn't some cheesy grrrrrlpowery way of making things "equal""~ ?? I'm sorry, but it's the internet, all you have as a means of expression are letters on the screen. No other context. No other indication what you might mean. Especially when you're anon. Because the way your comment is phrased, it can easily be interpreted as disrespectful towards feminism. Very easily. We can't read your thoughts, and sorry, but context is most of what makes the meaning. You just have to elaborate a bit more on things like that if you want to be understood correctly.

I didn't care that much, actually, about being correctly interpreted beyond "Must you? This is (a particular flavor of) cheesy." It even occurred to me that I'd be seen as antifeminist, because even though "grrl"-anything has become a bit of a self-aware joke by now, using it negatively generally demands (and does not reward even repeated) explanation. But I was surprised at the extent and degree of unwarranted extrapolation people indulged in. (Anti-PORN??)

That prompted the later post. Still angry, still dismissive, but more to the point.

I think my response above was justified, presuming OA was responding to my OP here and not to the previous post. They were basically just wrong. On the internet.

Except for the "scroll on by" message. That was as right as it ever is.

OP of the original thread here, the one who failed to have her need for sex-advice properly documented to your satisfaction.

Not feeling moved to participate in a particular discussion I can grok. But taking the time to piss all over my thread (as the first comment) means you're a grade-A asshole.

Cause remember, folks, talking about sucking dick is fun! But you'd better have a damn good reason to talk about licking pussy! Because that shit is on a NEED TO KNOW BASIS OKAY.

Weird, weird, weird.

I'm sorry, was that a need for advice? It came off as a cheerleading for the me-too team.

My bad.

BTW, is it not sufficient to be pissed off about rudeness and derailing, without making up stories about OMGCOCKNAZIS SUPPRESSN MY FEMNISMZ? Because that's where it starts to look really weird to me.

NYART

Listen, sometimes when everyone tells you you're being an ass? It's because you're being an ass.

Whether OP was "cheerleading" (whatever the hell that means) or asking for advice or maybe just attempting to open a discussion, who the fuck are you to judge? If you don't want to participate, move on. If all you're good for is sneering, then you can fuck right the fuck off.

On a side note: so what if it was "me too". Sometimes you just want to see yourself represented. What's so awful about that? As a longtime lesbian, I can certainly appreciate the desire to sometimes shout out "hey, we exist too, give us some screen time." I can't say what all of the OP's motivations were, but who cares, and more importantly, who made you the Lesbian Police?

Oh, no, I know I was being an ass.

I'm not sure why Lesbian Police is more important than "who cares?" and "fuck off, troll" though. Being rude and dismissive isn't the same as laying down the law. Why does everyone with a legitimate beef and valid points keep going one step further, right into the batshit?

For what it's worth, I do feel bad about completely derailing your thread. I forget how vomiting in the punchbowl can spoil a party.

This is the first anon you replied to:

It even occurred to you you'd be seen as antifeminist? Brilliant! And yet you continued on, spewing outrage at...people seeing you as antifeminist? Maybe you should have phrased it differently, because the way you did was patronizing and offensive. As you can see, I'm not the only person who noticed it and was put off by it. I wonder why?

It was patronizing and offensive. I did expect people to be put off (though I rarely think it all the way through to worst case when I'm anon, saying hooray I want to piss people off -- I go HEY I'M PISSED OFF WILL NOW BE VENOMOUS). I was surprised by the kind of fantasy stories people spun, though. Not so much personally offended as OH MY GOD ARE YOU MORONS (here let me fix you with more venom). I probably wouldn't have responded further if it hadn't been troll-o-clock.

Well, when you sneer and try to shut down people who want to talk about sex, you do leave yourself open to the charge of being... anti-sex.

Apparently you leave yourself open to any ridiculous thing that people feel like saying. Fair enough.

Except it wasn't a ridiculous thing to assume. Let's go back to basics. Words have meaning, did you know that? Do you know what anonymous means? It means that people won't know who you are or what your personal opinions are. All they have to go on are your words. Your words led several (many, in fact) people to an assumption.

People with no remarkable curiosity or imagination. The reaction could be considered predictable, but reviling anyone at length with so little solid supporting evidence is one of the most repulsive human habits. I am ashamed when I find I have done so. Which, of course, I have.

This leaves me at odds with most of my friends, I'll grant. Except for especially cool people who realize when they have gone too far and are willing to tell me I have done so without flouncing and screeching and burning straw men. Heart them.

How many times must I repeat myself? Why would I 'imagine' some scenario in which what you were saying wasn't offensive when...what you were saying was offensive? If it was predictable, why did you say it? Was it all a social experiment? Were you just ~~~bored~~~? I'm fascinated! I, too, have Cool Friends. When they say something that a lot of people get offended by, they examine their wording and apologise. Heart them! <333

I do heart them! Much good it does them. Here, I am only dutifully pointing out that such people exist, when "most of my friends" actually seem to think it's A-OK to stop thinking and start mobbing when something smells like it might be an enemy agent. Predictable, but not predicted in this case.

I actually have no idea what you personally originally said, anon being anon, but *many* responses went beyond "you are a rude jerk, go away" into something along the lines of "you are the OSC who must not be named and you want to destroy the source of all female power". Which brings me to: duh-WHAT? And honest if unnecessarily inflammatory reaction.

Yes, yes, I know, I started it.
