I really, really want a dog, but it's so expensive!!! I've looked everywhere, but there's not a single person in this town with dogs for less than 500€! Pleaaaaase someone give me a dog for a little less! I just want to love him and hug him and call him George ;____;

If you can't afford the dog in the first place, how are you going to afford its vet treatment? Like all the shots it'll need, neutering, and anything that might crop up?

Hey, she might be like me. I got a dog when I was damn poor, but managed to scrape up $300 for the first year of vetting/neutering. Now, if I'd spent that $300 on a puppy, I wouldn't have had the money anymore. I managed to find a "previously owned" young fellow for free, and then I still had the cash to fix him up (which is good -- he had worms and an intractable ear infection -- I used every penny of that $300 the first year). After that I was able to scrape together a similar sum every year, and luckily, as he grew older and needed more expensive treatment, my financial situation improved.

TLDR; doggies aren't just for rich people, and rescues rock. OP, go to your local shelter and see who needs love! Secondhand dogs can be great.

I can actually pay those 500€, but it's still be a big expense for me. I'd be much happier spending those 500 at the vet than to buy the dog.
I would prefer a 'secondhand' dog to a puppy, but apparently they don't exist around where I live... And the local shelter is only for cats ):

Is there any animal shelter by you?

Ask all your local vets! I'm surprised that there isn't a shelter near you, but I'm sure that the local vets hear of dogs/puppies needing homes on a regular basis.

Alternately, there must be a shelter within traveling distance. Even if you spend 100€ on travel, you'll still save 400€.

Tell us where you are and I'm sure all of us can google-fu you a doggie. :)

That's not so great for you, but if there's no animal shelter for dogs because ALL THE DOGS HAVE HOMES, that's pretty good!

You might want to Google around and see if there's any sort of breed rescue in your area. An example of a really good one local to me:

(I know you don't live here, but that's just so you can see what I mean.)

wtf is wrong with a shelter? Why do you need a dog that costs 500 euros?

Nothing's wrong with a shelter, there just isn't one near where I live. It's only for cats and rodents.

Cats and rodents in one shelter sounds like a terrible idea! Unless the reject rodents go for cat food.

Good luck on your doggie quest!

Why would you PAY (stupid amounts of cash) for a dog? anonymous October 12 2011, 21:07:49 UTC
When you can adopt? Are there no pounds/shelters/what have you in Europe or wherever you are where you can adopt a lovely dog in need? Does it cost 500 euro to adopt? Because that's cray cray.

If you're looking for 500€ for a designer doggie, then...well, here is Prince with his epic side eye. And I ain't gonna lie, I've got my Judging you right now look.

Please read all of the comments before giving me that look? I was searching for a rescue dog, but there are none around where I live. The only dog shelter there is around here is lost in the middle of the woods and I can't go there at the moment. Then I looked for someone who had to give away their dog because of whatever reason, and none again.
And the whole point of my rant was that I didn't want to pay those 500€... I would really, really love to adopt a dog in need! That's all I'm asking for.

Shut the hell up, PETA anon. Go adopt all the dogs in the world before judging people who pay for their pets. It's their money, they can do what they want.

DA

Okay, what the hell anon? Do you even know what PETA means? People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

They're the ones who go to bat for factory-farmed sows confined in breeding crates until slaughter, mutilation and butcher of live sheep, baby chicks thrown in wood chippers for disposal, livestock left to die slowly from starvation or beatings.

Piss off, you capitalist shit.

You need to google PETA and read more about them. Find out how many animals they have authanised.

PETA also thinks it's a fantastic idea to try and have adverts put up - adverts saying PAYBACK IS HELL, along with pictures of a shark with a human arm between its jaws and blood everywhere in the water - on the beach where a young man died because of a shark attack only a few weeks previously.

They're fucked up. They're deeply, deeply fucked up.
