I have recced these elsewhere before, but in case anyone hasn't seen them yet:
1. A fantastic character study of Sherlock, detailing his first stay at a rehab clinic. (Although this has mention of past slash pairings, they are not at all the focus of the fic.)

I'm not really a fan of self-promotion, but I am a big believer in putting gen fic where people can find it if they want it! If you're looking for character-oriented gen fic, check out the Sherlock stories on my master list: http://ivywatcher.livejournal.com/3067.html#cutid1
mazaherIntersections. Beautiful experimental multimedia fanfic focusing on Sherlock and Mycroft during the Hiatus.
thesardine"Action Man" Just after the Fall, Mycroft remembers his brother's childhood and youth. A stark, moving relationship study. Featuring a toddler!Sherlock who actually acts like a toddler.
aderyn8 Stunning one-shots and ficlets that usually focus on Sherlock and John's relationship (the exact nature of which is kept ambiguous, but clearly S and J are in the most important relationship of their lives). "Negative" is a metaphorical take on the reunion of Sherlock and John. Both the Dead and the Living participate. "Bowbroken" is a dream-like exploration of the mind/body "division". The Thames and its attendant deities wind through the one-shot "River Gods".

Some favorite gen fics:
lindentreeisle's Push!verse series. (G-PG-13? Last entry is unrated. Series has some violence, including torture.) Sherlock and John both have special powers in this series, but John's been living under the radar until Sherlock spectacularly blows his cover. A semi-antagonistic partnership eventually develops between them.
You've Never Seen the Lonely Me by Elster. (T) A lovely, quiet look at John and Sherlock settling in to Baker Street as flatmates and learning their way around each other's silences. The story focuses particularly on John's continuing emotional transition to civilian life.
Fragile by thesardine (T?) John is stabbed during a case and Sherlock reacts very realistically. A concise, uncomfortable, emotional powerhouse of a story.

View of a different landscape by be-a-rebel (PG-13). Haunting portrait of John passing through Pakistan during the war.
