Re: Fill: A Study in Winning 39e/? anonymous July 29 2011, 21:41:00 UTC
“Murray serves, Watson’s right on it, backhand Murray, Watson’s come in. Murray forehand, half volley Watson, Murray gets there, but the smash from Watson into the empty court and that could be the key point of this match.”

“Game, Watson.”

“That’s the break back Murray was fearing.”

“Three games all.”

“Sorry to interrupt, but we really do need to go to Court Number One. Richard, what’s going on over there?”

“Well, it’s all over, Anne. After losing the third set and his temper, Holmes came out here and simply powered his way through to take the fourth set. Federer barely knew what hit him. At times Holme’s game was brutal, so different from his usual display of technique and precision game strategy. He was like a bull, his shots hard, fast and deadly. He’s through to the semi finals. 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2. He’ll be facing Moriarty in a replay of the French Open Final.”

“Thanks, Richard. That’s three of the four semi-finalists now confirmed, but of course we’re still waiting on the outcome of the match that is simply gripping the nation. England verses Scotland. Veteran verses Youth. Watson verses Murray. And we’re going right back into the action.

*

Come on, Watson, you’ve broken him once, you can do it again. Close this game out, win, get off the court, grab a shower and later you can celebrate. Just win now. Dig deep, fight, like you used to, like you need to, like you want to. Fight and win.

*

“Fifteen-forty.”

“Watson has two match points here. He’s all over Murray, countering everything that has been thrown at him and returning it.”

“Murray serves, Watson backhand to Murray’s forehand, Watson’s stretching but the shot goes wide.”

“Thirty-forty.”

“One match point saved by Murray but look at that expression on Watson’s face. He wants this.”

“Determination. Sheer determination.”

“Murray serves, Watson returns, Murray down the line, Watson counters, Murray with the slice, Watson makes it and a beautiful shot there from John Watson, a neat little forehand that bounces just in and you can hear the crowd. They can’t believe it. They have witnessed a monumental match today, with brilliant play from both players, but in the end that ankle injury made all the difference. Today, given the chance, John Watson, on the cusp of retirement, stepped in and stepped up, and he has won; 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.

“John Watson is through to the semi finals!”

Well, I hope the longer than usual part at least makes up for the much longer than usual wait. Next part will be Monday. I've been taking the unexpected extra time this week to try and map out in more detail the remainder of the story but unfortunately that still means no part over the weekend. But like I said, Monday. I'll see you then. :)

Thank you. Glad it was worth the wait. I was a little frustrating for me not being able to post it, I can only imagine how frustrating it was for everyone else who wanted to know what was going to happen.

Yay for intensity. It's been a lot of fun so far writing the matches. More matches to come of course, and who knows what's going to happen. ;)

OH. MY. GOD! Please, if someone sees my jaw, can you pick it up because it jumped off and ran away while I was reading this. The three last chapters have been very intense and I was already gasping for this part on Monday when LJ wasn't working, so by the time you managed to post, I think I was as taut as John before his match.

You're so good with suspense, the back and forth between John's thoughts and the commentator was once again thrilling and I loved how easily you managed to keep us updated on Sherlock's match. Oh, speaking of Sherlock, what got into him? What made him more feral and aggressive? Was he thinking of John and of the upcoming celebration if they were both victorious? Was it the desire to face Moriarty again and get his revenge? Can I prevent it was because of John because I really want him to want John so badly the animal inside him kicks in?

Is it just me who can't see past chapter 16 on the original thread? I hope the other chapters haven't been vacuumed by LJcalypse, but it they have please will you post it in your journal or ffnet or ao3 once you're done so I can reread it again and again (and again)?

Seriously, well done. It had been a while since I had been so engrossed in a WIP and I love every single word you post.

It worked, thank you! Surprisingly, I never think about doing this until someone suggests it, I should stick a post-it over my computer screen with the word COOKIES on it.

Thank you, my anon rescuer!

Have you tried refreshing the page? Many pages only display partially for me right now, and sometimes I have to refresh several times to get the entire page to show, especially when there are a ton of comments or images.

Hopefully the weirdness resulting from the DDOS attack and the cleanup operation will go away soon.

Oh wow, brilliant. After a frustrating week of writing - or not writing - your comments were so helpful in keeping my mood up. Glad that the suspense worked. I know that some of the people reading this know little to nothing about tennis, so it's about getting the level right.

And as for Sherlock, I'm sure lots of thoughts went through his head, John no doubt being one of them. ;)

Glad LJ is getting better for you. I was having exactly the same problem. In fact I'm now having the problem again. It takes me about 4 refreshes of the page just to be able to find the comments to reply to. *sigh*

Anyway, thank you so much, glad you're enjoying the story. Like John I just have to dig deep now and keep going. :)

*runs in panting* I found you!

Oh this match was exciting! I actually felt sorry for poor Murray's ankle, and I've been for John Watson all along. Oh well, too bad, Murray. 8)
So happy that Sherlock and John are now both through to the semi finals and hopefully sexy times and press times ahead (on Monday).

And to author anon, thank god LJ is back. it's been a harsh week! I'll be back on Monday!

*runs in panting* I found you!

I was a little worried that I would lose people in the move, especially with LJ not being on top form, one of the reasons I wanted to wait until I could be certain it would all go through properly.

Anyway, the match was rather exciting, wasn't it. And so much fun to write. :D Poor Murray. I did feel a little guilty about doing that, but there are worse ways to lose and he did go down fighting. And yes, as far as I'm aware there will be some more sexy time coming up, although that's still not written yet. *sigh*.

thank god LJ is back. it's been a harsh week!

Harsh week for me too. It seems I may have a bit of an addiction regarding LJ, or at least half my life revolves around it. Oh dear.

It's good to see you too. I missed everyone while LJ was down. It was so frustrating having this part all ready to go and not being able to post it.

I feel like I'm at the match.

Oh excellent. That was always going to be one of the biggest challenges of the story - even more so than believable porn - believable tennis. Of course the matches only get bigger, longer and more intense as they go on. Just think, it's Sherlock-Moriarty next time. ;)
