FILL: Dosage 2e (WARNING: NON CON)

Donovan follows slowly, and has enough sense not to close the door behind her. There’s a distinct lack of seating in John’s bedroom, the desk he uses is downstairs, and any reading he does in his room usually takes place on his bed. She chooses to sit on the corner of the bed nearest to him, approaching very deliberately and sitting down so slowly that the mattress barely jars John at all. Hands in her lap, she picks at her nail polish; John focuses on the glossy flakes that start to litter her skirt in lieu of making eye contact.

“It’s… difficult. Sometimes. Being a woman in the police force.” She begins, haltingly, stopping her nervous fingers once she realizes what she’s doing. Fingers spread wide, she smoothes her skirt down; Donovan has small hands. John’s never noticed that before. “I’m not saying that I’ve ever been- that I’ve ever gone through-“ A deep breath, “but there have been close calls. More than once. And I’m not trying to say that I know what you’re going through, either. I don’t. No one does. But I know it’s hard. And if you need help, need someone to listen, someone to drink with, need something, anything. I’d like to help you. I’m… I’m offering.”

It’s a blatant emotional disclosure, on her part, and logically, John knows he should feel touched. Should feel honored, maybe even a little weepy, that she’s being so earnest. Except he doesn’t, doesn’t feel much of anything, really, so he gives her a croaky thank you and tries to subtly clear his throat.

Donovan nods, once, gaze focused on the overcast sky visible through his window.

“And should you feel up to it- I’m not saying you have to, so don’t think that you do- Lestrade keeps asking about you. I think he’d like to see you.”

John absorbs this with a clenched jaw and a quick swallow. Even he can hear the shakiness of his exhale.

“Would… would you go with me?”

Is anyone out there? Reading this? I doubt it; it (only) took me 6 months to get this out, and the fic isn’t even finished! I am so, so, so utterly sorry, I really am. I’d hoped, when I started writing, that I wouldn’t be the authors that left things to dangle and I’m failing miserably. I promise to de-anon when this is all over so you know where to direct your rotten produce, but in the mean time, I’ll attempt to finish this up, even if it comes a paragraph at a time.

TL;DR: It’s not finished yet, but it may take another 6 months, and author-anon is well aware of what a horrible person that makes them.

I'm still here, and though I don't love the idea of waiting another 6 months, if what I got was as good as this, I'd end up happy. Jesus Christ, anon, way to rip my heart out. You're writing John's reaction as so. very. believable, and so are all the other reactions, and just... wow. More more more please.

I'm still here too (though I can't remember if I'm the op or the oop or not, I suspect I might be one or the other) and I'd like to see this resolved. I've waited far longer than 6 months for continuations before, I'm not about to untrack the thread.

I'm still here also. Really looking forward to how Lestrade and Sherlock and John react to each other. I'm so glad to see this continued.

I'm just happy you're continuing, anon! I'd wait forever for excellent hurt/comfort, and this is definitely already in that category for me.

I mostly wanted to see how things played out between John, Sherlock, and Lestrade, but I really like that you've dedicated time to showing the different approaches by everyone else in showing sympathy/offering comfort. It feels uncomfortable and awful and I like that none of it, however well-meaning, is enough.

Looking forward to more, whenever it comes. :)

I'm still here, too! And WOW! This is so wrenching and so amazing. I love how you've portrayed John here - and Mrs Hudson, and Sally, etc. So nuanced and realistic. I'm rather desperate for John to see Lestrade now, but I'll gladly wait for months more if the rest is as well done as this. You've got my heart in your hand!!!

I'm still here, too! And I'm so very happy to see you continuing this! It's the one thing I check for regularly in the overflow post.

I'm very curious to see how you manage the C part of H/C in this. I feel terrible for all of them. Also, I want to see the case solved.
