Hunger Games AU? anonymous January 23 2011, 10:32:03 UTC
Nooo idea if this has been prompted (and if it has, omg please link me), but my roommate and my talking about Katniss and Peeta's relationship got me stuck on how I clearly have a thing for pairings where one person's devoted without any attached expectations and the other totally fails at feelings.

Which is to say I'd really like a Hunger Games AU: Sherlock and John are their district's tributes this year. A fill would just about make my month.

I am a different anon than above. I wrote this a while ago but have been too chickenshit to take it to the stage where I edit the everloving fuck out of it to post, so it's been lamenting on my hard drive. But as this is all safely anonymous I'll go ahead and share it with you guys. Hope it works for you.

Some names have been edited to fit with the Hunger Games verse. It should be obvious who's who. Americanisms left in due to the AU setting.

Warning for graphic violence, some gore, disturbing imagery, dystopian themes, child abuse, animal abuse, general terribleness, and nonchronological timelines. (If I missed anything my apologies.)

Jon watches the selections listlessly, the images sliding by despite the personal investment this year. It’s still unreal to him, like a twisted joke Hellebore’s playing on him. He can’t even remember what the girl selected looked like though it only just happened ( ... )

“Jonquil, is it?” the boy says with a slick smile, all teeth. “Feeling a bit yellow?” He snaps the electrified baton out, blue sparks arcing across the surface. Jon remembers the scream of the boy from District 7 that was first hit with it at full power-the raw, animal noise of pain.

Jon tightens his grip on the knife, thinks of Sherlock, blood bubbling over his lips. “Not in the least”

“Such a shame that this ended up so boring,” the boy laments, pouting. “Sherlock proved to be no match and all that’s left is his incompetent watchdog. The people deserve a better show than this.” His hands wave out to the unseen cameras, mouth opening to continue. Jon has seen this before. He likes talking, likes working his victims up, taking them apart. Playing with his food ( ... )

Lestrade is a worn man, hair graying early and face already lined. A victor who doesn’t relish his spoils, spending all his time holed up in the victor’s village. Jon thinks it strange this is the man who won, who outlived all the others when he barely seems alive. Jon wonders what this tired man was like, years ago. What quality in him meant he made it until the end ( ... )

Sherlock suddenly clutches him close, an emotional display that catches Jon flat-footed. He wraps his arms around the other boy, reveling in the warmth, the touch and comfort he can’t remember when he last had. He waits for a knife in the back that doesn’t come, feels the wild curls tickle his cheek. Ah, something for the cameras, their forbidden friendship, overcoming all obstacles. He never would’ve gotten sponsor help without Sherlock. It’s undoubtedly the smartest thing he’s done ( ... )

As Jon prepares to run from the bloodbath at the cornucopia, he sees Moly dart forward, heading directly for the choicest prizes.

He shoves the emotions down into their little box, but she calls his name and he’s forced to look. A bag, dark splotchy green and obviously full of supplies, is hurled in his direction. He barely catches it, only notices the belt of knives attached to it when his hand touches the cold metal. It’s an impressive throw. But it’s too late, the others are moving in.

“Moly,” he screams, desperation clawing. No, she can’t be-All those sessions, she was training for this.

“RUN!” she cries, face desperate and determined all at once. Don’t waste it, she’s saying with her wide eyes. I’m choosing this.Jon swallows his emotions, knowing the weakness will reflect badly and hurt his slim chance at sponsors. He shifts the pack fully on and starts running for all he’s worth ( ... )
