Sherlock deduces John is in love with him, & proceeds to profess his own love for John.
Unfortunately Sherlock had deduced incorrectly, and John has absolutely no romantic feelings for him.

A similar story to this was running through my head on the bus this evening. I might give a crack at it but I like happy endings, see, so that's a problem...

Incorrect deduction. Unfortunately, John *does* have/develops feelings, and so it's not the angstangstangst the OP wanted. Fun story, though.
