FILL (3/?) anonymous July 31 2010, 20:00:54 UTC
The first time Sherlock notices something has changed, it is because Lestrade has come into work for the third day in a row with some kind of injury. The first was a black eye, the second a bruised wrist. Today he is limping.

He ponders saying something, asking, but when does he ever do that? No, he will learn all he needs to simply by observing. That has never failed him.

As it happens, John asks anyway. ‘Are you alright?’ The limp is slight, though it’s probable he noticed it, either due to his own psychosomatic one or because he is a doctor. He is gesturing to the fading bruise on Lestrade’s face, though, so Sherlock can’t be sure.

The inspector stills for a moment, before shaking his head ruefully. ‘Tripped over the cat, landed on a chair. Not my finest moment.’

Sherlock is almost certain that Lestrade is lying, but not completely sure. His eyes narrow. He will have to watch the man more closely if he is to deduce the mystery he presents.

----

Lestrade forces himself to remain impassive, casual, to give nothing away. He knows that if he comes in with any more injuries that Sherlock will begin to suspect, and the thought shoots cold terror through him, gripping and twisting at his chest. No one can know. No one can find out. He doesn’t know why this is so important, just that it is.

When he goes home that night, he panics. He panics out loud, and Daniel laughs, cruelly - there are no longer apologies, they have moved far beyond that - and agrees to keep away from his face.

The next day, he receives no questions, and only a mildly speculative look, though he has to hold himself stiffer than usual, and keep from breathing too deeply; his ribs are badly bruised, possibly cracked, but he manages to hide it. At this point hiding it is the only thing he can let himself focus on for more than a second. That and work.

Work has in fact become the only escape available to him, and he spends as much time as possible there, putting off the dreaded moment of returning home as long as he can. While he works, he doesn’t have to think about ... well, anything else, and right now that is all he really wants.

----

John can see there is something wrong with Lestrade, though he isn’t sure what. In the months he has known him, the detective has been solid, dependable, energetic. Now, he comes into work bruised and clearly aching, muscles knotted, face tense and unhappy. He seems twitchy, agitated, shadows under his eyes like he hasn’t been sleeping well. The doctor in him makes him sit up and pay attention, sets little niggles of concern prodding at his chest. He thinks Sherlock has noticed something too, if the calculating glint in his eye is anything to go by, and that settles him somewhat. If something is wrong with Lestrade, then Sherlock will soon work out what it is. Still, he’ll keep an eye on him as well; it won’t do any harm, and if it is something to do with emotions, with actual people, then Sherlock might not pick up on it as well as he would otherwise.

This is so awesome it hurts. I love that you took this prompt up, i love how it's going, I love John's concern. And I fucking love your Lestrade. Can't wait to see more. I'm hoping you carry it to a threesome. Not usually my thing, but I'm super curious about it with these three.

Aww, thank you! Glad you like Lestrade :D And yeah, I'm going to try with a threesome, I think, though I doubt it'll end up anywhere explicit. It's not something I often read, but I really like the idea of John/Sherlock/Lestrade.

Ok - calm down *takes deep breath*

Right, well, the characterisation is brilliant, and I just love how you've illustrated the progression from happy relationship to the unhealthy one, it's very beleivable.

Right, well I'm sitting at the edge of my seat, please update soon and thankyou again :)

And you are most certainly doing the prompt justice - better than justice, this is like, above and beyond what I was expecting, so thank you again :)

His perpetual tension and dread of going home particularly ring true to me. And I love the thought that there are people eager to understand what's happening to him, who will help as soon as they know how.

Thanks! Really glad it works and is believable, since that was kind of a worry for me.
