FILL: Not Very Scientific Part 2/2

“Well, like I said, it’s different for everyone. For me there’s a base layer of deep affection. Being in their company is soothing and I feel happier when they are around. Then on top of that I’m interested in them-truly interested, I want to know what they like, what they don’t like. It’s not physical so much as the desire to know everything about them, and I’m always pleased when I find out something new.” He was smiling faintly now, lips turned upwards and eyes warm. Sherlock was silent, listening intently. “The next layer is more complicated. I feel protective of them, even though I know they can take care of themselves. I don’t think I’ve fallen in love with someone who couldn’t take care of themselves, I don’t think I could. So there’s the urge to protect them from harm there, but also the knowledge that they don’t need me to. At the very top is physical attraction. It’s important, to me at least, but it isn’t the end-all and be-all of being in love.”
There was silence. Sherlock was very obviously thinking over John’s definition, and as the doctor returned his attention to the television, he caught Sherlock mouthing some of the words to himself. Several minutes passed before Sherlock seemed to come to some sort of conclusion. He sat upright and looked at John, face determined.
“I notice that you used abstract pronouns in your definition.”
“Really? I hadn’t thought about it,” John raised his eyebrows.
“John, I love you.” Sherlock said it almost defiantly, as if he was expecting John to be offended.
“I know,” John replied, turning to face the detective.
“What?” Now Sherlock looked baffled. John smiled.
“I know. And I love you. I’m surprised it’s taken you this long to figure it out. Aren’t you supposed to be the world’s only consulting detective?” The look in John’s eyes was wicked and Sherlock looked utterly lost for a moment.
“Well, as I said, I didn’t fully understand the emotion.” He sounded sulky, but didn’t break eye contact with John.
“And now that you do?”
“Now that I do, I should very much like to kiss you.”
“All right then,” John grinned, turning off the television set. “Let’s change some brain chemistry.”

Aaah, John is utter Brilliance!! This whole fic is adorable and fantastic. It fits nicely into my brain's explanation of why Sherlock and John must obviously be in love. And That last line just killed me! I giggled most embarrassingly. Of course John would have to wait for Sherlock to figure things out!

That is adorable. I love John's reaction. It's just so wonderfully in-character. How John figured it all out a long time ago, and just patiently waits for Sherlock to figure it out, too. So much better than the 'plotting to make them realize' thing. To my mind that's rather like picking an apple before its ripe. Prone to go down badly and stay down worse.
"Let's change some brain chemistry." PFFFFFFT. ILU, JOHN!
