Fill - Sire anonymous February 2 2012, 07:41:58 UTC
I've used a real mix of legends for this wee fill and hopefully the characters make sense. Sorry I failed to get in the sword fighting

“Merlin,” Lestrade said with a sigh, “why am I not surprised? Sherlock mentioned you were the government, I should have guessed then.”

“I was always better at keeping a low profile, sire,” Mycroft replied.

“The years haven’t dulled your ego then,” Lestrade said.

“Or your constant desire to protect your subjects.”

“Not my subjects anymore.”

“Well obviously after the monarchy lost any real power you would be drawn to roles in the police or military, but these islands will always be yours, sire.”

It sometimes felt like he’d seen a thousand lifetimes pass and he didn’t even remember some of them but Merlin had always been around somewhere. Even if they never met he would find traces of Merlin’s meddling every time his memories were awoken. It was comforting to know that Merlin would always be there, even if it was also bloody annoying. Merlin was definitely his oldest friend.

Of the others he never knew who he would encounter, but he’d run into most of them at different times, their souls reborn time and again but without the memories that he was gifted/cursed with. The sex changes had been the hardest to adapt to.

“There’s never been so many of us in one place before, has there?” he asked Merlin.

“This is unprecedented for a time without a major world crisis yes,” Mycroft replied, “how many have you identified?”

“Bedivere, as loyal and annoying as ever,” he replied. He’d had to hide his laughter when he’d realised who’d been glaring at him with Sally Donovan’s eyes but it made sense. Bedivere always ended up at his side just like Merlin always ended up meddling.

Of course it was nothing to his reaction to a strung out genius junkie with the weight of magic and knowledge tumbling out amongst the deductions.

“How do you think Sherlock would handle finding out he was the reincarnation of Morgan Le Fay?” he added. “Did you always know?”

“Of course,” Mycroft said, “I have high hopes that this time her lust for power and knowledge is channelled safely, at least for the world if not for him.”

“Well teaming him up with Gawain was a masterstroke.”

“Thank you,” Mycroft inclined his head. “I thought so when I found him. That loyalty is a defining feature even if he doesn’t quite know why.”

“Still a ladies man too,” Lestrade laughed. “If only he knew.”

“That his uncle’s half sister is now his best friend?” Mycroft raised an amused eyebrow.

“Don’t remind me of how messed up my family is,” Lestrade said, “I still haven’t gotten over being married to Morgause during the war.” He shuddered. “It is good to see you, Merlin,” he added grabbing Mycroft and impulsively hugging him.

“And you, sire,” Mycroft said, submitting to the hug, “I am always here,” he added burying him face in Lestrade’s hair briefly. “There are others gathering,” he said pulling out of the hug. “Mordred is close I just can’t catch hold of him.”

“Do you think he’s the reason we’re all in one place?”

“Not quite all,” Mycroft said.

Lestrade sighed. “I thought maybe Molly, and there was a young DI but I haven’t encountered either of them since the first time.”

“I don’t think they’re returning sire,” Mycroft said.

There was silence for a moment and then Lestrade shrugged.

“We’re here for a reason so let’s get on with it,” he said. “To the best of your knowledge, and I know how much that is, Mordred is our only threat? Then we need to talk strategy.”

“I think Morgan is the centre this time,” Mycroft said, “Mordred is obsessed.”

“Then we have to keep an eye on him. Gawain will have his back but he’s more stubborn than she ever was and damn hard work to keep safe.”

Mycroft smiled. “Ever the protector, Arthur.”

“Ever the manipulator behind the throne, Merlin.”

Lestrade laughed. Even if once again England needed him, and he’d live through a thousand more times, he had Merlin at his side and more of his family around than since that fateful battle, so it could be worse.

Oh my gosh, author!anon. This is more perfection than I ever expected.

I love the friendship between Lestrade and Mycroft; their long and enduring friendship. I didn't mention it but I love it when they're friends rather than lovers. *glees*

And, I'm giggling over all of your reincarnation choices.

Thank you so much anon. You're awesome in every way.

Best lines: “Thank you,” Mycroft inclined his head. “I thought so when I found him. So Mycroft and so Merlin.

"If only he knew.”// “That his uncle’s half sister is now his best friend?” He should know! That would be so funny.

Are those always missing Gwen and Lancelot?

Excellent story, short sweet and perfect Mycroft/Lestrade interplay.
