one more soul to the call (2/2) anonymous January 18 2012, 20:13:34 UTC
Back at the hospital, the commotion has cleared up. There isn't even much blood still on the pavement, not really, certainly not enough for someone who has fallen from such a great height--

He stops himself, and instead focuses on how he's going to get inside of the building.

Needn't have bothered, it turns out, security's as lax as it could have been, no one around, not even any constablers, nothing, nothing at all.

No Jim, either.

Sebastian knows what he should do, knows because they talked about this, before, but then before meant that it didn't seem nearly as real, so far off, an entirely improbable happening, and so, he had never really thought about it.

And now, now all he can hear is Jim's voice, his voice, whispering, in the dead of night, if i die i want you to kill them for me, seb, i want you to kill them all, every last one of them. burn the world for me, seb, would you? but to hell with that.

Before he goes up to the roof, before he climbs the stairs to what he now knows is inevitably waiting for him there, he checks all of the other rooms. Finds nothing, but then, he didn't think he would, not really, except yeah well he did.

And that's one of the things Jim always nagged him for, wasn't it? Right. Said that he was too hopeful, believed too much in the possibility of a good outcome, of the happy ending, and wasn't that stupid? They were villains, weren't they, wolves and evil wizards and owners of a million gingerbread houses, and the villains, they never get their happy ending do they.

Then the roof.

if i die

The blood has already begun to congeal, one big puddle of it underneath Jim's head, then smaller streams branching out, criss-crossing like some spider's web, sticky and shiny and-

if i die i want you to

His eyes, his eyes, they're still open, dead and blank and open and the first thing he does is close them, because he can't stand that gaze, can't stand how even now, empty and bottomless, it still hurts hurts hurts so much.

if i die i want you to kill them for me, seb

For a moment, he almost gives in. Kill them all? Fine. He'll do that. Kill Watson. Kill Lestrade. Kill the elder Holmes, kill the little kid walking down below with his mother, hand in hand, yes, he'll kill them all, every last one of them until-

if i die i want you to kill them for me, seb, i want you to kill them all, every last one of them

Except they are not who he has to kill. No. There's one person, and one person only, who is responsible for this. Well. Actually. Two. But one is easy to get to, and the other, well, the other, if he's really dead, they can just all meet up in hell can't they. And if he isn't, if now, in this final game, the detective managed to one-up the greatest criminal the world has ever seen, then he'd-

if i die i want you to kill them for me, seb, i want you to kill them all, every last one of them. burn the world for me, seb, would you?

But no. That's not it. That's not the point, never was, right? Right yes of course.

There, on the rooftop, kneeling next to the body of the best man he ever had the honor to know, Sebastian laughs.

Laughs and laughs and laughs until his laughter is nothing and everything at the same time, resounding throughout the whole world.

Then, just as sudden, he falls silent.

Because he gets it now, gets all of it now, and it really wasn't that hard to understand after all, right, Jim?

He pulls out his gun, unfastens the safety catch.

A smile spreads across his lips, it lights up his eyes and he starts to laugh again-

Bang.

if i die, i want you.
