Title: The Case For Prehistoric Drives murf1307 January 16 2012, 01:55:08 UTC
Mycroft Holmes is slenderer than he's been in years when he walks into the Scotland Yard Christmas party (mainly just to bother Sherlock and John -- though John will likely just find it amusing).

Perhaps that's what sparks the flash in Detective Inspector Lestrade's eyes when they see each other from across the room. His pupils are dilated in seconds, and his hand, Mycroft notes, clenches around his drink; subconscious need to keep himself in check. Mycroft almost smirks.

They don't know each other, not really. They've met a few times -- Christmas at Baker Street last year, for example -- but they've hardly spoken.

But nevertheless, the Inspector looks at him, the subtle fierceness in his eyes sending something down Mycroft's spine.

The moment ends with Donovan distracting Lestrade, her hackles up (probably over some insensitive comment Sherlock has made purely to get a rise out of her). Mycroft takes the distraction for an opportunity, and weaves through the crowd, so that when Lestrade is finished with Donovan, Mycroft is very close behind him. Maybe that is why Donovan retreats so quickly.

Lestrade looks over his shoulder, and there it is again, that ancient drive laid out clearly before Mycroft.

"Good evening, Inspector," Mycroft says, quiet -- not sultry, never sultry.

He does well, it seems, because Lestrade takes hold of him by the upper arm, and, to everyone but Mycroft's (and maybe Sherlock, if he'd been paying the exchange any mind) surprise, putting his other hand at Mycroft's waist, yanks him forward to throw him over his shoulder.

Mycroft doesn't let the shock in the room affect the way he gives them all a slow smirk and a twitch of the eyebrows.

After all, Lestrade's actions are perfectly explicable, if you knew what to look for, and it's not like Mycroft's complaining.

Wonderfulness. I love how it's "perfectly explicable".
