MINI FILL: "404 error: file not found" (2/2) nejem November 7 2011, 14:50:12 UTC

* * *

Sherlock wakes up and finds a green post-it note on the bedside table.

Mycroft is dead.

He gets up, puts on his old blue dressing gown, leaving it open and free to swish around him as he walks into the bathroom. John is there, taking a shower.

"Mycroft is dead."

John turns off the water and opens the curtain, taking a towel nearby to dry himself off. He steps out of the bathtub and looks at Sherlock with soft concern, glancing for a moment at the brightly coloured post-it note in his hands.

"I know. You forgot?"

Sherlock looks at him for a long minute: he forgot. He hates to admit it but yes, he forgot.

He nods.

"Who is Mycroft?"

John looks like he's been punched in the face. He takes a deep breath, eyes moving up to the ceiling for a fraction of a second before settling back on Sherlock, his brilliant and mad and old and ill Sherlock.

"He's your brother. Your older brother, you used to fight a lot but it was obvious to everybody that you cared-"

He has to stop talking because his voice is breaking. He blinks once, twice, three times. A few more blinks and the tears have gone back to where they came from.

"Put on the kettle, would you? I'll just get dressed and then we can talk about Mycroft if you want."

Sherlock looks at John flashing him a small, sad smile. He wonders why he's sad. He nods.

"Yes, I think I'd like to remember my brother."

Sherlock wakes up and finds a pink post-it note on the bedside table.

Throw away the head in the fridge.

He gets up, puts on his old blue dressing gown, leaving it open and free to swish around him as he walks downstairs towards the fridge.

"Good morning," John greets him with a smile.

Sherlock ignores him and opens the fridge, eyes scanning through its contents and hands moving food and bottles around.

"What are you looking for?" John asks, patience audible in his voice.

"The head."

A sigh.

Sherlock feels John moving behind him, hands reaching for his to stop his frantic search.

"There hasn't been a head in this fridge for years."

He looks at John and suddenly he remembers: past, it was raining outside, John opened the fridge and stepped back in disgust because of a head, a foot, a heart. He remembers John, a younger John. He was closing the fridge, shaking his head, muttering about getting a separate fridge for experiments and asking Molly never to let Sherlock borrow other body parts.

Sherlock moves quickly into the living room and looks for his phone, John following him closely with a worried frown.

"What are you doing now?"

"I just remembered, Molly."

"What about Molly?"

"I never thanked her for the head. I should call her, it was a useful head."

John looks as Sherlock crouches down to look for his mobile under the couch. He doesn't have the heart to tell him that they went to Molly's funeral just a week ago. Sherlock will remember, in his own time.

Sherlock wakes up and finds a purple post-it note on the bedside table.

John. Whatever happens, remember John.

He gets up, puts on his old blue dressing gown, leaving it open and free to swish around him as he walks downstairs into the small backyard.

John is there, sitting on a chair and reading the newspaper. There's no cup of tea in his hands, Sherlock forgot to make it. He didn't make coffee for himself either.

He walks behind him and bends down to brush his lips against John's temple.

"I forgot to tell you I love you."

He can't see it but he feels John's smile.

* * *

Sherlock wakes up and finds a yellow post-it note on the bedside table.

Don't bother making tea.

He gets up, puts on his old blue dressing gown, leaving it open and free to swish around him as he walks downstairs.

The house is silent.

OP, I just realised I followed your indications about what the notes should say and how they get fewer and fewer as time passes much less than I thought I did... I'm really sorry! If you don't like it I'll delete this, no problem, hopefully someone else will fill this better than I did because I messed up a bit...

That was quite beautiful in an honest, painful way. When I finished it I thought of how sad John would be to leave Sherlock when he was most needed and how good it was that they did have so much time together.

I wanted it to end in a happier way, I really did, but... I wanted to leave it there and let everybody imagine their own heavenly happy ending if they wanted, it felt right to end it there for some reason I can't explain. I'm really glad it worked for you and you liked it, it wasn't an easy subject to write about :)

Thank you so much for your kind words!

The things. This did. To my heart. Oh god, you managed to get in a heartbreaking moment for everyone, didn't you?

The ending just about killed me. The way you didn't have to say it because the reader knows exactly what you meant...

Thank you.

God. My heart. This is...well, brilliant, of course, but heartbreaking. And that line that you kept repeating! He gets up, puts on his old blue dressing gown, leaving it open and free to swish around him... That killed me. I don't even want to think of a Sherlock who loses his incredible mind. Ahhh, I'm a bundle of emotions. I'm probably going to read this about three more times, because apparently I like pain.

Wonderful job. <3

I tried to use the repeated lines to sort of symbolize how Sherlock's illness sometimes makes him do or say or remember certain things over and over again, day after day, and it just gets worse and goes on and on. It was... painful to write and picture, even more painful to witness, I guarantee. I'm really happy you liked this sad sad thing, though, your comment is wonderful! :)

Thank you!

Fluff makes it better, try it! Or crack! Or fluffy crack! Or cracky fluff! Or Monty Python! They will make your heart feel better, I promise! :)

It was the reaction I was hoping to convey, though, it means my job is done and I can go back to lurk in the dark XD Thank you for your comment, dear!
