Nesting your fill allows others to link directly to your fill instead of to the whole prompt. It keeps fills organized. It allows for multiple fills on a prompt without them getting mixed up. It makes for easy reading. It isn't a rule, but it's definitely meme etiquette. Please, please, nest your fills.
Nesting works like this:
Prompt - Fill part 1/x - the first part is a response to the prompt. Press "reply" on the prompt. - - Fill part 2/x - the second part, and all following parts, are responses to part 1. Press "reply" on part 1. - - Fill part 3/x - response to part 1. Press "reply" on part 1. - - Fill part 4/x - response to part 1. Press "reply" on part 1.
If you do the 1a, 1b, etc. style, it's the same thing. It might look more like this:
Prompt - Fill part 1a/x - response to the prompt. - - Fill part 1b/x - response to part 1a. - - Fill part 1c/x - response to part 1a. - - Fill part 2a/x - response to part 1a. - - Fill part 2b/x - response to part 1a. - - Fill part 3a/x - response to part 1a.
Only part 1 is a direct response to the prompt. After part 1, all other parts are a response to part 1. No other parts a direct response to the prompt.
That's basically it! Go forth, write fills, and nest them.

You will (hopefully) have comments all mixed in there. Don't get intimated or confused. Just keep all your following parts in response to your part 1. With comments, it might look like this: Prompt - Fill part 1/x - the first part is a response to the prompt. - - user comment of love - response to part 1. (Notice the indentation is on the same level as part 2.) - - user comment of love - response to part 1. - - Fill part 2/x - response to part 1. - - - user comment of love - response to part 2. - - Fill part 3/x - response to part 1.
Tip: If you want to keep things really neat, you can avoid having user comments at the same indentation level as your fic (parts 2 onward) by putting up parts 1 and 2 (or parts 1a and 1b) one right after the other. Then initial comments will be in response to part 2 (or part 1b), like so...
