"It's been barely a week, and you're already pining," Mary said, putting a hand over Watson's. Watson turned away from the window, inclining his head towards her and then leaned in to capture her mouth in a kiss.
"Not pining. It's autumn. Autumn is always a bit maudlin, don't you think?" Watson turned his gaze back out onto the courtyard. "Would you mind…"
He looked back at Mary. "No, no. I've become too accustomed to Mrs Hudson, I'll get it myself."
He went and fetched his pipe, returning to his perch at the window. Mary ran her fingers through his hair. "And now you must become accustomed to a wife," she said softly, and Watson turned his gaze to her once more.
"A wife, a lover, perhaps one day a mother?" Watson said, and Mary cupped his face in her hands, kissing him gently.
"And a friend," she murmured. "I'm not half as fascinating as your Mister Holmes, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve."
Watson laughed, squeezing her side. "Ah, I don't doubt that, my dear."

Breakfast the next morning was a quiet affair, Mary reading a letter from her sister and Watson perusing the local journal, one hand wrapped idly around his tea. "Shall we go for a walk today?" he asked.
Mary turned her head to look out the window. "Yes, that would be nice. It's a sunny enough day for a walk, isn't it?" She looked back over his face. "You seemed cheered."
"The company of a beautiful woman and a good cup of tea seems to do a lot to cheer any man's soul, I find." He reached out and put his hand over Mary's hand. "I love you, Mary Watson."
"And I love you, John Watson," she replied, smiling. "Are you happy we married?"
"Of course I am," he replied, turning up her palm to trace the lines with the tips of his fingers. Mary watched the action, and curled her hand into itself.
"You and Holmes were very close, weren't you?" she murmured.
"We were-are, I should say-the best of friends. And colleagues, of course."
"Will you continue to work with him?"
"Perhaps." John looked over Mary's face. "Would you prefer that I not?"
"Oh! John, do you think me that cruel?" Mary picked up Watson's hand, kissing his palm. "I would just like to know that I am on your mind when you look at me with those wistful eyes."
Watson put down his tea and took both of her hands in his. "Mary. It is you I married, it is with you I will always remain. My heart belongs to no one but you."
Mary smiled widely, standing up. "Let me get something suitable on, then," she whispered. Watson watched her leave, and then looked out the window again, watching the leaves fall slowly onto the ground.

Watson shut the door behind them and helped Mary out of her coat. "Bit of a brisk day. Autumn is truly finally upon us, isn't it?" He smiled at her and hung his hat.
"The leaves are always so beautiful right at the beginning, before all the brown sets in," Mary agreed, picking up the small pile of post and shuffling through the letters. "Oh…darling…" She held up a telegram. "For you."
Watson frowned and took the telegram from her hand. "Watson, needed back at Baker Street. Could be dangerous. Need a doctor's expertise. Holmes." He looked up at Mary, clenching the telegram in his hand.
Mary reached up and smoothed a hand over his face. "Go then. Where would Sherlock Holmes be without his faithful Doctor Watson?"
Watson smiled and kissed her. "And where would I be without my faithful wife?"
"Where, indeed?"
