when I logged back in I was un-surprised to find that of the last 50 posts, all but a handful were either automatic re-tweets or from one brave soul who seems to refuse to give up on actually using LJ as a journal.
Hmm, I wonder who that is. Jokes aside, there's a number of users that are still active, actually, although it's true that many folks have left.
What ends up happening is that you get an enormous breadth of information that is incredibly shallow [...] it's impossible to share what you are thinking or feeling other than a painfully short synopsis. It winds up presenting little more than a veneer of the tweeter, only the vaguest impression of who someone is and what they are thinking and feeling. Building any kind of community on these thin veneers results in a community that is as shallow as the tweets themselves.
Well said. Twitter has its uses, but it's not a substitute for blogging/journaling any more than flirting with a stranger on the bus is a substitute for a lasting and committed relationship.
