Update #1

May 26, 2009 20:04

So, I finally figured out that my motherboard had bit the dust.

At first I thought I had bad memory. See, out of the blue my computer stopped booting correctly; it would halt at the memory test. Memory would seem to be the culprit, right? So it was off to the store to snag a couple of new sticks.

No dice.

Next best guess was the motherboard. I ordered one from NewEgg. Shipped real fast! So I spent some time disassembling the old machine. Plopped the new board in. Started plopping components in.

Then I realized I'd need some thermal compound. I realized this late at night. So the project got put off till I could get some.

So I finally got some and went to put it all together again. Was snapping in the heatsink when it snapped. Literally. The little legs had gone brittle or something and came apart. Had to get a new one of those.

Put it all together today and viola! Computer starts up.

Ah, but I'm running Windows Vista. Vista does not like a new motherboard. Not at all.

So now I'm busily reinstalling shit .. ah, computers.

More later.
