Steve
talked about this a few days ago, but my opinions are slightly different, so what the hell.
Serena lent us the fourth season of Buffy to watch because it's one of her favorite shows. Neither one of us really watched it before, and since Serena and Matt missed a good bit of the X-Files (gasp!), we decided to trade shows, since she has 4-7 of Buffy on dvd, and I have all of the X-Files (yeah, stfu).
After Steve posted his general comments (which were completely right, btw, Buffy does kind of suck), we were told that we really ought to watch the first three seasons rather than just read about them on wikipedia as Serena suggested. Since the first two seasons are up on hulu, I tried. I did. For reals. But after watching the premiere, I couldn't do it anymore. I gave up and read the summaries on Wikipedia. (and, as it turns out, I must have watched a good deal of the first season way back in the day because I remembered most of the plot. Huh. Who knew?) Now we're just going to watch 4-7, mostly because they aren't as awful. I know I ought to watch earlier seasons for more Seth Green, but screw that.
Anyway, here's the thing: I don't think I actually like the show. I love you, Joss Whedon, but you weren't on your A-game when you did most of Buffy. That said, there are things that I am going to watch the rest of the show for: Giles and Spike. Yep. Giles is hilarious, and despite the fact that I keep expecting him to eat rats or children, he's really a kicked puppy of a character. Then there's Spike (and yes, I now fully realize that he plays basically the same character on Torchwood. Except, you know, with less vampirism). He conveys precisely what I think about a group that refers to itself as the "Scoobies". It's like he's a built in eye roll.
So while the rest of the show is lame (and for the love of all that is holy, Angel might be the lamest vampire in the history of lame vampire stories - he's even lamer than Edward Cullen), I'm staying.
PS - Don't hate me, ex-Simplexers!
Edit: I'm watching an episode right now, and there was a Dr Who reference. Is it bad that I immediately nitpicked it for accuracy instead of just enjoying the moment? Yeah, probably.
